The history of crankey...

...from the time I first signed up here, I've blindly accepted the "crankey" image as a part of the community... but really, where did he come from? Was he invented here? Why has he become so fucking popular? Could someone shed some light on this peculiar character?

Really? It slows my computer way down, but if you give it some time, it loads. It's worth the wait, too. That is the definitive crankey thread. I've been meaning to go through there and save all the crankeys, though I'm not quite that bored at the moment.
