Glass blowing?

I would like to get into making hand made glass objects and pieces. Does anyone have any tips on where to start?

Find a glass shop that you like their work and become their bitch....or as they call it in the industry "apprentice" :wink:. Or there are glass places that put on glass tutorials like small stuff eg making glass beads and small trinkets. All you need for that is a torch you can pick up at Home Depot and some glass rods. Reasonably inexpensive. Check youtube and the interweb. Use google to search for glass blowing videos. The internet is your friend!

in my experience, glass blowers, the pipe makes i should say, are stuck up, pretentious ass clowns who think no one else is worthy enough to learn their "oh so great" knowledge.

That's ait of generalization, if you ask me. I know 4 really great glass blowers that are stand up people that I call friends. I like to believe that we are humble souls.

I was looking around for glass blowing classes in my area like 2 months back. I didn't have the greatest of luck but it's something to try.

I heard the average life expectancy of a glass blower is 35 because you can get glass in your lungs.

Probably bullshit though.

Well, it's not so much that you get glass in your lungs, but glass blowing involves alot of fuming techniques that involves infusing metals into the glass. Alot of blowers don't have adequate ventilation and the metal smoke gets in their lungs. That is the reason that they may have a lower life expectancy.

Could you use some kind of machine to blow as well as help make the glass and possibly wear a mask?

One of my friends that blows has a vent with an out blowing fan coming directly off the end of the torch. He doesn't have any problems, but a mask definitely could help. It couldn't hurt.:shrug:

Every time you score and snap a tube, glass wafts up into the air. Lots of major health risks, popping holes sends hair thin glass up into the air. As Bliss said the fumes are the largest concern. Oh and you will get cut and burnt. a exhaust fan pulling clean air from behind you is your best friend.

You got to make a name for yourself to get the flow. You have to have an artist statement of sorts. You not only need to blow glass, but you need to get good pictures. I know guys that sell 20,000 dollar sculptures. 20 hours of labor into it. With a staff to help him create the idea. Hence the hefty price tag. People pay it too.
I say photos because galleries need photos to promote the exhibits.

I been spinning on an off for a year or so now. The biggest thing is patience.

Do you want to work a furnace or torch? Do you want to blow in a studio or in a private shop.

ts a tuff rackey to get into. u will need to work for at leased a year before you can actualy make anything people would buy. loads of overhead. O2 aint cheap
