found out my employer was lying to me about my wage

so yesterday i had a little free time to check out my profile on my work's computer. they were changing my admin status and insurance info and left it sitting open in front of me. anyways, i realized that i'm actually getting paid $1.75 per hour less than i was told upon the initial hiring. it's not a huge amount of money, but i'm a pizza driver so i get paid shit from the store already. it was supposed to be $8 per hour, but the computer said $6.25.

i've only been with the company for 5 months so i'm not sure if it's worth the confrontation. what do you guys think? i get along with the people there pretty well, but my boss is a fat bitch who only cares about fucking sugary coffee drinks.

Just go to whomever is in charge of payroll and simply ask. Don't be accusatory, just ask if maybe you are mistaken about your calculations or something and have her explain.
If you come up short just say, oh i though i was getting paid xxx amount...

Don't say I was thought.

Say I was told.

Make sure you have this clear to them.

It is worth it. That's likely a good few hundred dollars you're out on because of them. And it is worth pointing it out, because they sure as hell are not making $6.25 per hour, and neither should you. Check your sheets and get back-pay too.

Do you have a contract that states $8?

Lol damn my son. 5 months without checking your stubs to see if your being paid correctly? You must be a very trusting person. If they were in sales I'm quite sure they would already have you selling ice to eskimo's on commission without a question.

But in all seriousness. Stand up and make some noise, if you have been shorted money, they are usually legally obligated to make restitution, particularly on things that some people forget to cash in after a job, ie: vacation pay, sick days. etc. Most people just don't bother asking for it and assume they wont see any of it, however if you bitch about it enough they always somehow stumble upon some cash they forgot to give you.

This happens much more often than you think, often to people just starting out in the work force and either A) Don't know any better because no ones told them. or B) Are afraid to raise questions for fear of being fired.

And Remember, this is another persons business and source of income, they will cut you short if they think you wont know or wont care.

even if they admit to a mistake, by not complaining you pretty much ruin it unless your state has particular employment laws on the subject.

performance of the parites alters contracts where there's no objection to the alteration... but I'd bitch anyways

For you hourly workers, ALWAYS compare both your time and wage to your paychecks, especially at the beginning of a job. Bust out a calculator if you have to.

I have personally seen or known of many many cases where this type of "mistake" is the norm. 40.5 hours becomes 39.75, or $8/ hour becomes less, overtime one week is moved to a short week and not paid at 1.5, etc. This is ridiculously common, and no one is going to look out for you other than yourself. Don't kid yourself, nickels and dimes add up to a lot over months of work.

quit bein so fuckin soft and do what you gotta do. like antipock said that money will definitely add up over months and thats money that could be in your pocket. i bet if you do a a caluculation of $1.75 times the complete total of hours you've worked for 5 months you will get a number definitely in the hundreds and your going to be pissed they ripped you off from that money, because your being a pushover and letting it happen...

What the heck are stubs? Every job I've ever worked that paid me by checks just gave me the check. I've always just kept track of my hours, and made sure my paycheck was the correct amount of moneys.

Stubs just state how much your hourly rate is, how many hours you worked for that check, how much your state took from you in taxes(those assholes >_<), and sometimes it'll say how much you've earned overall before and after taxes were taken.

Are you serious? A stub is the shit you rip off the check. Unless you are working under the table pretty much every paycheck comes with a check stub.

Let's assume you work a 40 hour week.

40 X $1.75 = $70 per week
$70 X 4 = $280 per month
$280 X 5 = $1400

If you work 40 hour weeks they have stolen $1400 from you. Do something about this now, and don't let people push you around like this. ALWAYS check your paychecks to make sure they are right.

yeah i guess i'm too trusting when it comes to people. most of my money is from tips, so the paychecks just went from my pocket to the bank account without really looking at anything except my total and tax amount. i don't have a contract that says $8 either.

i'll ask her about it, but i guess i'm just fucked, eh?

The key phrase there is "pretty much". I'm pretty sure that not every paycheck comes attached to a stub. I've worked under the table plenty and usually those jobs pay in cash. I could be wrong but I think I'm on the books at this job. It's a high end Italian restaurant and I'm head bartender, I don't think I'd be off the books and under the table. But hey I could be wrong and that may be the reason that I don't get stubs. But I doubt it.

Could someone else please confirm that they also get (or have gotten in the past) paychecks without stubs? This is gonna bug me now.
