closing threads for discussing non-sponsor vendors?

I understand this if the thread is about a product that most if not all sponsors readily sell, but a thread was just closed regarding a product that none of the sponsors sell.

That seems a bit harsh to me.

Indeed, the policy is in place to protect the sponsors, but in this case, if none of the sponsors sell this product, there is no reason to enforce the policy.

additionally, can people discuss sponsers that are recently not a sponser? If people buy an item from a sponser, then have difficulty or whatever, shouldn't they be allowed to discuss it for a reasonable time (month at least) after the purchase, despite the vendor no longer being a sponser?
There's at least one instance of people being told not to talk about a company due to them no longer sponsering this site, yet this site vouched for them when the user placed the order. Perhaps some clarification?
