to yawning: this is what I've been using for the past year.  All my composition tracks were recorded through this as well as all my others(made a "finalized" amateur cd couple weeks ago)



I can't play to loud or else it frapps and distorts the sound when recording, so I usually use my little 10 watt crate bass amp and I hook up either my boss metal zone pedal or this:



I set up the little amp about 6-8 feet away from the mic above(again, if it gets to close, the sound will come out all distorted and sound like shit, regardless of what I do with the microphone levels and whatnot)

I record through cool edit and after it's finished I mess with eq, removing hiss and clicks and pops.  Sometimes I add some chourus or delay through the programs effects.

I think I've done pretty good on some of my tracks for what I'm working with.  I've never thought of using headphones though.  Do you think they will work better than my current mic?  I find a picture of my only headphones...but I find there is a short in them, the left side always cuts out randomly so I don't know if it'll be good to record with them:
