desensitization

desensitization is not just a result of violence on tv, games, most any entertainment. it's all around with police, hospitals, firemen.
i've been hearing ambulance and police sirens, and to a lesser extent fire trucks, for the last two and a half years. first near a busy set of intersections, now near the only hospital in town. the sound of an ambulance no longer makes me stop to think, hey, somebody's about to die or is in pain; not that this directly effects my (noted) life in any way. this isn't to say that i don't stop for emergency vehicles while driving people in high crime areas, especially downtowns, get used to seeing police fight with drunk people or deal with stabbings and shootings.
*note, an ambulance driving by inspired this post, and as i'm typing it, police sirens are going off in the distance.
so, are the inherent results of our culture (not including media/entertainment, as crime/violence has been around since before "civilization") desensitizing all of us? or is it a combination of inherent results and external/additional factors?

I was having a conversation with a bus driver today, asking him why we are so desensitized to, specifically, food. We really couldnt come up with anything substantial, but im guessing it has to do with being a dualistic society that in general cannot see the interconnective metaphysical tissue that unifies all reality. I know, big words, but i think this makes for the capacity to become desensitized, with beings and the suffering in the world.
I think its interesting to see when im in a conversation with someone who is ver desensitized. Its almost like they are living an illusion...talk about blank stares when you tell them about all the people starving in the world. Blank becuase they have lost touch with their feelings, numbing themselves everyday, to things as a way to protect against negative emotions. It is a defense mechanism that comes into play when you cannot fathom reality.
I think i do this on a daily basis, less now but still nonetheless.
The best way to connect yourself, is to look for things in yourself, within other people and recognize the potential that exists in all mind, in all hearts to feel and have new knowledge revealed.
Peace jamm on

It is no different than a computer, you need to make sure its anti-virus program is in check and that it doesnt have a script that limits your experience, because of to much precaution. And remember the computer does not appear to respond to words of anger and frustration - just give it input, in the form of new meanings that you know to be true and its messages to you and the limits it lays out for you, will change. Guilt is an outcome of believing you are the cause of the problems. Yet, we are not a cause to something, we see is negative or bad - Unless you believe your intentions are directed towards a bad outcome....

What about when we were cavemen clubbing each other to death, eating animals alive and raping women?
In light of that, what is desensitization???
