I wonder what the odds are of getting it published, or of anybody liking it.
This would be a good time for other closet novelists to champion their cause.

I'm willing to read a little bit. My reading habits are ALL over the place (but are mainly rooted in fiction). If you need an unbiased opinion, let me know.

I've just written a book, a work of pornographic fiction, and I've been writing stuff like that for my loyal Internet fans for many years now. At the moment friends are proofreading my document (nothing but good reviews) and a gifted artist friend is working on a piece to use as cover-art.
I don't publish yet, but I do have busloads of fans on the world wide web, where I have my websites and post in writers communities. In very small circles I'm a celebrity
Join a writers community. Have them proofread, build a small Internet fanbase.
There are www companies that you give your manuscript to, they will do the printing, online marketing and mailorder selling and you get a percentage of books sold without investment. That way you just write and get paid, which is every writer's dream.
I know they exist but you have to find them, I just publish privately and in online format free of charge to my fans and interested parties, I haven't gone commercial yet because its a hobby and I love to write for the underground, instead of catering to the masses. I wanna write spicy gourmet shit, not bland mcdonalds.
Tell us about it, what kind of novel is it?
Oh and you definitely want THIS free goody to write your story with.

Oh btw:
If the Shroomery didn't have its share of assholes I'd upload some of my stuff, but I have no intention of unleashing a campaign of mean-spirited mockery and harassment upon myself. Also I've seen said cunts defile MySpace pages and websites etc of other members - so no, I won't stick my head in that noose. It won't "stay in OTD" and it won't even stay confined to the Shroomery.

Got news for you... no place is asshole-free. Expect criticism, and lots of it. Unfairness, harshness, rudeness... it can't be avoided. If your stuff is good it doesn't matter.
The MAL forum is pretty receptive to creative work. If you want ass-kissing you might find it in a creative writing forum.

I know that when places get big enough they accumulate a number of assholes.
We however have an assholes forum with their own asshole culture (OK its a lot like /b/ and some trolling forums) and the staff either sits by or fans the flames.

Where does freedom of expression end and harassment of others begin?
Freedom of expression has to be balanced out by protecting people from harassment. In my view the Shroomery focuses so much on the freedom side that they neglect the protection side, with as a result a general toughening of the mood in some of the forums that I've noticed over the years.
Freedom's a great good, but so is protection from harassment.
Like what I said about writing and food: the old school shroomery used to serve spicy gourmet shit, but it's becoming more and more like mcdonalds - less flavor, so more of the masses will kinda like it. By becoming this big we lost something over the years and I still miss it

Enough soapbox preaching already, on with the thread.
Writers forums are a good place to get in touch with.. they'll review your stuff and give you a far better opinion and advice than we can.

OP here...
I'm surprised I got some help on this. I thought I was going to get mostly

these kinds of responses.
The writer's forum sounds like a good place to check out. I don't really want to post any excerpts at the moment, but will probably make a non-anonymous posting in the literature forum when this project is complete, which will be in a year or so.
The novel is fantasy based. It's very organic in that the 'magic' is subtle and doesn't involve casting spells that creates blue orbs, etc. Yes, there is a dragon and an adventure/quest, but it isn't too bad a ripoff of pre-existing literature
If it's original enough and the adventure is engaging then I see no reason why the world shouldn't have another story of a dragon quest with wizards and magic. Thanks again to those who helped.

Your writing probably does suck. You don't need OTD to tell you that. But thank you for sparing us the excrutiating experience of reading your dreck.
