How do I secure my files on my computer from roommate/friends?
    #7654441 - 11/19/07 12:05 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I don't want to have to password the whole computer or anything like that because sometimes people need to use this comp if someone is using the one in the living room and i have no problem with this. but i do have certain files on here they i wouldn't want wondering eyes to stumble across. (ie: shroom grow logs/pics/techs/personal) so i was wondering if there are any free programs i can use or what i can do to secure these files. like a password protect on the files i want ya know.

Use NTFS permissions and set up user accounts.

After everyone who wants to use the computer has an account, right click the folders you don't want people to access (it's easier if they're all in one folder) and click "Sharing and Security" then remove all the accounts who have access to the folder and leave only your username.

Unfortunately, password protecting a folder doesn't work for protecting the computer using the examples he gave. As HELLA_TIGHT said, enable accounts and restrict access. For common use by untrusted users, create a guest account. Even then, a dedicated person can still get access to the data, but it will stop the casual user.

I use Cryptainer for my sensitive files. It works well and is easy to use. Plus it's freeware. The only problem is that it can only contain files 25 Mb or less. Also, I'm sure a determined hacker could get into it, but we're just talking about ordinary users, right?

Since you're using XP pro, simply select the files, right click. and select encrypt. If you don't have that context menu option then right click and hit properties then check the encrypt box.

It's as simple as that, I'm surprised that nobody came up with it sooner. Remember though that if you ever forget your password or your computer crashes you will lose those files for good. There is a rather complicated system for the encryption that makes it so that you can't access those files from any other account or OS even if you have the password.

You can re partition your hardrive so that folders on an allocated portion are inaccesible to users who do not have authorization to access that drive I think perhaps.
