Digging up immature shrooms for cultivation?
    #753674 - 07/17/02 03:14 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Hi. I just went picking cubensis mushrooms the other day and found about 7
nice sized shrooms which can be viewed at
http://members.aol.com/shroomery123/shrooms.jpg The caps on the large ones
are about the same diameter as the tomatoes in the picture (approx a 3 or
3.5 inch diameter). Do you think if I took 4 and my 100 lb girlfriend took
3 we would have a nice trip? Also, getting to the reason for this post.
While picking I found tons of immature fruits. One can be viewed at http://members.aol.com/shroomery123/immature.jpg
This is currently the VERY
hot summer here in Alabama and the immature shrooms die too easily in the
heat. I want to dig up some of the manure one morning and take care of the
immature shrooms until they reach maturity. I could put them in flower pots
or something and take them home I suppose. Is this possible, and if so does
anyone know a good method for me to promote further growth?

Thanks in advance!
-Daniel

Ok couple of things.
1. Are you sure those are cubes?
2. Those immature shrooms, ARE NOT CUBENSIS. They look like Copelandia/Panaeolus cyanencens or some other type of Panaeolus species. There is a reason they are not "maturing," that reason being that they *can't* mature anymore because they're not even Cubensis. Maybe you should study up on your mushroom identification. Copes drop black spore prints, have thin stems, and overall, look nothing like cubensis.
3. This thread belongs more in Cultivation or General questions, not hunting forums... but I'm not going to move it yet, I'd like to see what others say about your misidentication of the "immature cubensis."

The second pic is of Panaeolus Sphinctrinus and is inactive.
What you consider immature is actully a mature specimen
and can be found growing abunduntly on dung.

Assumption in wild mushroom foraging can lead to unpleasant
results! Be aware and be safe... Happy Hunting.

Actually, I posted the wrong picture as immature.jpg. The real picture is now at http://members.aol.com/shroomery123/immature.jpg

They are the pinheads that never seem to develop into shrooms. I always come back the next day to see if they have matured, but they always die off. That is why I want to dig up the manure and put them in an environment that will promote growth. By the way, I am certain that the large ones I have already picked are cubensis. I will make the post in cultivation to see what they say.

Thanks,
Daniel

When I click on your URL's nothing but a blank page appears.

First off, there is no such thing as an inmmature wild mushroom.

P. cubensis fruit completelty in 24 hours of growth. If smaller ones are there then that is usually the size they will be. If one is small and has not opened its veil thaen it will before the day is through.

They only take 24 hours of growth to reach maturity in the wild.
