Dish Network or Direct TV?

I've finally broke down after years of no paid tv service at my mountain home and I'm going to get it. Now which company do I go with? I am clueless why one would be better than the next?
Is there a good way to buy like a black box (you know a magcal box) for either of these systems ?
Any advice into satellite providers would be great! I mainly want to watch sports and some movies.

Direct TV is far superior.
It's:
More reliable Better channel selection Easier to use/get used to Better customer service.

I had dish network up until 8-10 months ago.
I wanted to upgrade my SD DVR to an HD DVR and they would not allow me to do this with the combinations of receivers we had. We were using 2 SD Receivers, an HD Receiver and 1 SD DVR. 1 of the SD receivers was bought the rest leased.
They have some shitty point system that they assign their receivers and you cannot go above a certain number. The DVR's having two tuners counted as 1 point per tuner UNLESS you were giving it back to them then it only counted as 1 total. So, to get a HD DVR (2 points) you have to give up two points on your account. This means that in order to upgrade the SD DVR you had to send in it AND another receiver to get two points. I was told this not by just one clueless sales drone, but a total of 6 different CSR's, 2 being the floor managers. So there wasn't some misunderstanding...
Before that I was happy with Dish Networks service, although some channels seemed to be lower quality then normal. Specifically, comedy central on dish compared to cable and DirecTV looked like like ass. After a few days of the run around with dish network I finally called DirecTV and told the the sales guy exactly what I wanted in each room and he made it happen. The installers had it quite easy since everything was already cabled for a nearly identical setup.
I've been more then happy with DirecTV since switching, the DVR was still kinda sketchy the first two months we had the service and was nearly to the point where I was going to switch to cable or try to switch back to Dish with a new account to see if they could do what I wanted as a fresh client. But DirecTV put out several updates in a quick succession and the stability problems went away. There are still a few features that the receiver needs but is really a fine piece of equipment. The older members are always talking about their TIVO units and how great they were but I never had one so have nothing to compare it to.

yeah thats my problem too...when the nearest convenience store is 45 minutes away and your road name is a bunch of numbers, when there even are street signs, you know you live backwoods.

i think it varies from area, because i had Direct TV in my area and it had none of what you stated, we got Dish network and it was way easier to use and had better customer service. i dont know about channel selection though.

I have Dish Network. I like having Free Speech TV, IFC, and the Documentary Channel for cheap.

I was an installer for both systems for 5 years.. based on my experience and customer feedback Dish Network is by far the winner: better customer support (24/7), less outages/higher signal strength, lower prices (at least used to be..), more channels, more options. However if you're in it for sports.. go DirecTV.. they have a much better sports package. You really can't go wrong with either company though.
