Hypothetical situation (Nature vs. Nurture)
    #7376095 -

Take two people of below-average intelligence who are impulsive, trashy, and always getting into trouble. Let's say that these two people have a kid and the child is taken away at birth and placed in a stable and loving home with intelligent, supportive, and well-grounded parents. The child receives the best in education and upbringing.

Do you think that intelligence and personality are genetic and that the child will be stupid and a fuckup? Or do you think that the good environment will be what shapes the child and they will end up smart and well-adjusted?

I disagree. I think that most of our personality and intellect comes from our genetics.

I do think that the child will be more intelligent and well-adjusted than his biological parents, but I still think he will lean towards the dumb side of things though.

I believe that the genetics would be a factor but that the environment would be the most influential factor in the child's development.

the kid will be more intelligent, better-adjusted. maybe not as much as if he had been genetically predisposed to be intelligent, but assuming the well-to-do parents aren't fuckups at raising kids, then they should instill a good work ethic and sense of determination in the kid. so even if he is somewhat below average intelligence, he should be able to study well to compensate.

i agree with these guys. nurture has more to do with social behavior and personal abilities than nature

the genetic aspect would of course be a factor but so would the environment. the child would turn out better because of how he was brought up. so yea the genetic low intelligence factor and the other factors he was predisposed to would play a part, but the strong positive environment would play a huge part in making him a far better person than he'd have become if he had grown up with his biological parents.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

Nature and nurture both play a part in shaping a person. Some people are genetically predisposed to lives of violence but it all depends on what kind of an environment they are raised in. So the kid would probably be smarter than his parents.

If I remember my psychology textbook correctly, genetics have much less to do with intelligence than environmental situations

And thats why they turned into assholes. No discipline. Thats part of the scenario, good parenting falls in the category of good environment. I dont know a kid in the world who was given everything he wanted and didnt turn into a douche bag, unless he learned at an early age how to act like, well, a civilized human.

It's obviously a combination of nature and nurture. I think nature rules, while nurture plays a smaller part.

King James IV of Scotland was said to have raised babies by remote control in complete isolation from their elders. Do you think the children learned to speak to each other?
