How long does Calcium carbonate take to modify pH?
    #7362203 -

Since I'm waiting for some jars to colonize, I decided I'd practice making 50/50+ casing mix. Since I don't want to buy 50 pounds of hydrated lime, I picked up some calci-sand at my pet store, which is ground up calcium carbonate.

I did a litmus paper before, and 1 hour after adding the calci-sand (10% by volume), and the pH remained at 6.

i know calci-sand is better as a long term buffer, but I didn't know how long it took to affect the pH.

sorry, I didn't really ask a question there did I?

How long should it take to see a pH change?

Add another ten percent gypsum and it should jump up to 6.8 or so. If you want it much higher than that, it takes hydrated lime. Since a casings life is measured in weeks, not months, you don't need a long term buffer. You need short term pH correction. That's why I recommend hydrated lime and gypsum. The correction is immediate.

Gypsum won't be a problem. I just really didn't want to buy 50 pounds of the hydrated lime. What to do, what to do...

Is there any reason we can't add baking soda to the casing? After doing some tests to make sure the litmus paper was ok, I remembered about how base the baking soda was. It uped the pH immediately. Can I use that or is there a reason I can't.

In many parts of the world where the soil is naturally sweet, it will be very hard to find lime. You can order hydrated lime online. Check our vendors. I'm pretty sure a few have it. If not, you can order it from best hardware. Just do a search for hydrated lime when you get to their site. Be sure to use 'horticultural' hydrated lime, not the stuff for concrete or steel work. www.doitbest.com

You can't use baking soda. The salt is toxic to fungi.
