Substitute for waxing, styrofoam plugs
    #5647838 -

This is an alternative to wax if you have a jar of spawn that you would like to put in logs.

The aluminum tubes are to cut the plugs with. I sharpened them on the pavement.
There are two there, the first one the plugs weren't snug enough. I used a 3/4 inch drill bit for the holes.

The spawn is Neolentinus ponderosus on grain. The log is pine, and will be burried. This log has holes in the top bottom and sides.

Thanks for sharing..

I'd love to see how this turns out.

Did you try this before? I guess the styrofoam will act as a barrier to prevent animals from eating your grainspawn.

Hi Falcon

A really good idea that will give me the chance to try to enhance this start idea simply better. Doing like you do, to my opinion the biggest problems you can meet are 1. mycelium damaged, infected by insects attracted by the grain 2. Birds love grain, they fight for their lives, I'll bit on them. 3. Bad colonization on the lugs, roots. Simply upgrade your grain spawn to sawdust spawn, sawdust attract a lot less than grain. And more, your mycelium is used to colonize wood. Some wood lover species mycelium could attract insects, birds, wasp while others not. Your the trainer of your athlete so train him on the same transfer sub. species that he'll finish with.

Thanks for this idea Falcon

Good luck and have fun

Hey Owl,

I haven't tried this before with styrofoam, I have done oysters this way using wax. I did do a couple of kinds of mushrooms with the styrofoam on different logs with different kinds of spawn, sawdust, cottonseed hulls and fine wood chips.

The idea came when I saw some Shiitake thimble spawn that a guy was selling. The thimble spawn is sawdust spawn backed with a thin layer of styrofoam and shaped like a thimble.

The styrofoam should act as a barrier to animals, the biggest problem I have is with slugs, and to hold moisture.

Hi Micoloco2,

I agree sawdust spawn would be a much better choice. I will make or buy a plunger for sawdust for the spawn to make this easier to do next time with sawdust spawn.

thanks,

falcon

That's what I'll use.

I'm curious to see if it'll be hard to seal at the even level of the bark, the foam used is thin. Using our spawns are a lot better than the ones buyed and 100 X cheaper. Those are stored and ...

Still for me a good idea to develop, looks like selling logs inoculated at the farmer market here will work!! like the magic tub and the blocs !!!!!!! Could I belive it!!! Poeple are amazed when they see the mushrooms on the blocs in the tubs. The show, American way = better selling.

Later+ Falcon

The Neolentinus has not fruited, it may not.

Here is K. mutabilis fruiting using this method.

I have a few more logs with other species going with this method, nothing that has fruited yet besides the mutabilis and oysters.

They are pretty good, CureCat, they have a mild mushroom flavor and a nice texture when sauteed.
