The season finally heats up!

Well after an all but non-existent start to the season, we finally have our first Atlantic hurricane! Looks like it'll be a monster too...



I'd be watching this closely if I lived along the Gulf coast! By the time it's in the Gulf it could be a major category 4/5. As is, the Leeward Islands will have a category 2/3 storm on their hands in  one day...I hope they're prepared!!! :confused:

I was just quoting various newscasts after the bridge collapse. They were all saying Katrina was only like a category 3 and if their levees didn't suck ass it wouldn't have been as devastating.

I'd like to see whoever is saying that ride out a strong cat3 storm!

Katrina did make landfall as a category 3 storm...but it was a strong cat3 (almost cat4) and it still had a large wind-field more reminiscent of a cat4 storm (it was a cat4, just before landfall).

I'd ride out a category 1 storm in any old house (well not any). I'd ride out a category 2 or maybe 3 if I was in a strong building. Anything stronger than that and I'd be getting out of there before it hits :wink:

I can't really talk, seeing as im in southeastern PA, the worst I've felt from a hurricane is excessive rain and some slightly stronger wind :lol:  I remember I got pulled out of school for Floyd because I had to help sweep the water into our sump pump. :lol:

Well that's all I've ever felt where I am :smirk:
SW Ontario sometimes gets the remnants of a hurricane...and once we had a "great lakes hurricane" but it wasn't strong or anything.

You can see it does have an eye, so it was definitely warm-core. Happened back in September 1996.

It's been 102 here for the past month with no rain. I'll for once be glad to see this hurricane. Clouds seem foreign now. I'm far enough inland to not be directly smacked.

everyone always over reacts .. like the one that just hit texas.. it did nothing, but eveyone was running around all crazy at the last minute buying truckloads of water and duct tape,lol :smirk:

Duct tape's jumped the shark as of late...I mean I can actually rip it with my bare hands.  It shouldn't be that way :lol:.  Maybe there've been too many kidnappings and they had a meeting in favor of weakening duct tape.  :nonono:

i got some off brand duct tape that's just horrid. it barely even sticks to stuff and rips far too easily. the mr. fixit diyer in me wants to toss it and buy a new roll of good stuff, but the cheapo packrat in me can't do that.

Use mil-spec 100mph tape instead... much better... can usually find it at military surplus stores for about the same price as duct tape.

Screw the gulf... Last I looked, the models show a 40% to 50% chance of it hitting me.  Damn thing is messing with my diving plans for this weekend.  Even if it misses, those 5-meter seas make getting onto the boat after a dive an interesting challenge.

The last time a tropical storm was in the same location, and everybody was taking it easy, it bloomed into a cat-5 out of nowhere and pounded us hard.  No power for three months after that, literally.  Maybe we have a little bit of an excuse to over react?  I bought an extra few liters of rum yesterday, just in case.  :smile:

Tomorrow I will know if I have to put up hurricane shutters and move the boat to the mangroves.  It could be a fun weekend.

This thing looks like it could blow up just as it reaches Martinique. I (in my limited knowledge) am thinking a strong cat3 or even weak cat4.

Yeah, its always interesting when the season gets a slow start. But its not unusually late this year. Remember, Andrew (first named Atlantic storm of 1992) devastated South Florida in the last week of August.
