Trying to dry out a musty room
    #7216718 -

So I'm about to move into a new house here shortly and the basement there was a little humid/musty. My first thought was that I might buy a lot of desiccant and leave it around the room but I'm not sure if that'd be efficient for a whole room. I then thought maybe I could use my food dehydrator but then it occurred to me that the room would just get unnecessarily hot.

Anyone have any ideas on what would be the best (best means least expensive and efficient to me) way to deal with that kind of room?

Oh very cool. I was trying to search for a dehumidifier but couldn't think of a good keyword except for dehydrator. I see some cheap ones on ebay. Thanks.

You can pick 'em up cheap at thrift stores like Value Village or Salvation Army. You can also find 'em at garage sales.

Only time I've seen a dehimidifier running in a house, it was a machine the size of two vacuum cleaners that drew so much amperage you couldn't have the lights on in the room when it was running or the breakers would go off.

Good times paying that electric bill!

Must have been some unholy sort of industrial sized ones then.

An adequate dehumidifier would be about the size of a mini-fridge.  You just have to drain the water from them every so often, but they actually do work very well and don't draw THAT much power.

Well it was a heavy-duty one... it was drying out the concrete after the carpet was ripped up to be replaced after some flood damage.

The thing drew nearly as much power as the central HVAC system did.
