Patching holes in a dry wall
    #3811627 - 02/21/05 03:19 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I punched/kicked some sizable holes in the walls of this house today and they need repairs. I have putty, one of those flat metal knife things, and the tape that can be used for patched.

Unfortunately I'm completely incompetant of completing this task. can anyone get me tips, hints, tricks, or any advice on fixing this BS. It's so frustrating that I'm about to punch more holes.

Ouch...you've created some work for yourself. I think you need to cut the holes bigger, cut pieces of sheetrock to fit, tape, mud and paint. Go to a hardware store with reasonable prices and have someone explain the process to you.

It may not seem like an intelligent descision, but it's definately stress-relieving.  :smirk:

I did stage one of patching up all 4 of the holes, so those need to dry.  The biggest annoyance is a huge hole that I fixed a few months ago.  It healed as a slightly protruding, swollen, but perfectly smooth lump.  Should I should sand it down to flatness?.. or add more plaster around the edges so that it appears even? or what?

Thanks for the advice, folks.  Next time I'm pissed, I'll take it out on the government.

Only until you hit a stud and break your hand.  At that point the stress seems to come back with a vengance!

I had a psychologist tell me that might happen a while back. It hasn't happened yet, but I did have to go to the ER after I punched through a window.

Sand it down an apply some texture...unless your walls are completely flat. If you're going to hit something, make sure it can't hit back (i.e., having to expend money/energy to repair it).

I had an accident with a doorknob and drywal once, which made a pretty big hole. You can buy a patch kit at a hard ware store whigh has like glue, mud, tape, plaster and this screen thing, the screen thingy is like the lazy womans (i.e. me) way of fixing larger holes, because it makes it so you don't have to cut out another piece of drywall, just stick the screen over the hole and voila... you're ready to mud and sand.

it depends on how big the hole is... if its bigger than roughly 6x6in its better to just replace a section of the drywall.... if you just wanna quick fix it... use the stuff you got... drywall tape/puddy/trowel(sp)

if it IS a really big hole, cut the hole so it is square. put a 2x4 in the hole so it reaches both sides of the hole. next drill drywall screws into the wood thats behind the drywall now. then find a peice of drywall to fit in the hole. and screw it to the 2x4. then use tape to make the seams, and putty over it. i do this for a living, and this is the easiest way. also, with the big lump you have, feather the drywall paste out farther so its less noticable, and THEN sand it down to perfection. take care.
