I would say both banjo and mandolin are easier than guitar...I still think Bagpipes are one of the hardest instuments, but that statement is TOTALLY effin' biased.

Mandolin's are incredibly hard to play well, though. They are just about as techinical as any orchestral instrument; even banjo is.

mandolins arent incredibly hard to play, easier than guitar atleast. i got mine back in december and i'm pretty good at it now. i play banjo too, which i find to be easier than guitar too. once you get your right hand roll patterns down on the banjo, it becomes pretty simple. scruggs style that is.

I would also agree that mandolins aren't hard to play in comparison to other instruments. In my eye, they are all easy if you will to learn is high enough. When I first started guitar I had a blast(and still do) learning the hard things. I never thought, oh shit this instrument is hard, and then do something else. If you have the will to play and learn, I think anyone will find any instrument easier to play.

This is my mandolin given to me by Mac McAnally, a profession musician. He produces Jimmy Buffett's stuff and is the big red headed guy that plays next to him on stage. He is a country singer songwrite that has wrote a lot of hits on the country charts but he never wanted to become "famous". He enjoys doing what he does. I am actually seeing him live next monday and eating breakfat and picking with him Tuesday morning. I didn't mean to go off topic but hey...what the hell.

These are my guitars I play regularly. I have two more but they aren't anything special.

So a mandolin is four doubled up strings... that sounds kind of sweet actually... like the cool sound of a 12-string guitar with the convenience of a ukulele.

Have you considered piano? It's extremely easy to pick up and really fun to play. I love going to someone's house for a party, finding out they have a piano, and then playing for everyone. I once went to a gay ass party that we knew was going to suck so we ate some shrooms. Later on I found a piano and rocked it and I don't know if it was because we were tripping but everyone loved it!

It's tuned upside down like a violin or fiddle. And unlike the twevle string guitar, each pair of strings is the exact same guage and octave. In a bluegrass setting the mandolin kinda acts as a drummer when they play rythm...But lead mandolin is the shit. Here's one of my favorite songs of all time and there is a mandolin in it...david grisman at that.

bass was really easy for me to pick up at first, but very hard once you try to do complicated stuff.

what kind of signature bass do you have? its not a victor bailey is it?

here's my set up...

Steve Harris (bassist from Iron Maiden).

It's incredibly easy to be a halfass bassist. It's incredibly hard to do the complicated stuff.

Thats my baby with ebony instead of rosewood. I just found out that they stopped making instruments though! :crankey:

Id Like to pick up a F-style someday.  Is there any difference in sound between the F and A style?

I highly repsect a good bass play. And good I mean someone who's not the worst guitar player in the band. I love a good slap player.

I'm blessed to know such people. Not just on the bass but a few instruments. Open mic. nights are a lot of fun.

I was thinking you should learn an instrument, seeing as how into music you are.  This is a good decision.

The problem with playing bass is that the frequencies carry very well through walls, so you might have problems with your neighbors if you live in an apartment.

You can turn the volume way down, but that's no fun.  With a guitar you can at least turn it up a bit.

Drums are impossible in an apartment.

Keyboards are doable if you're into that kind of thing.

Luckily we live in an era where there are plenty of playable instruments for 200 bucks and up.  I would be wary of anything that costs less than that new.

Unless you get an acoustic (which are usually more expensive, especially basses) you will also need an amp.  You can get a passable solid state practice amp for less than a hundred bucks, even less used.  If you want to go one step up, you can probably get a VOX AD15 for a hundred-something.  Nice amps are more expensive, but you probably won't want one until later.

You can find peer reviews of virtually any instrument or piece of equipment here:

amen to that. Twenty or thirty years ago, a quality $200 guitar would have been a serious piece of shit. but with new technologies in machine work and stuff like that, guitars and instruments in general are getting a lot better. Many professional musicians and non pros alike have told me this. I would only agree.

Hey. I'm waiting until I move into my new apartment - next Wednesday. My roommates will actually be the singer and drummer of a band I really like (well, I probably really like the band cause those guys are my friends ) and I'm hoping they might be able to talk their bassist into tossing me an old one of his or something just to borrow.

That's how I learned the dynamics of bass playing.  I borrowed a friend's bass when I was living in a dorm, and played it almost constantly (because I got burned out on guitar) and I've actually gotten to the point where I enjoy playing bass more.  I guess it's because you can man-handle them a lot more.  I like to slap and pluck, shit like that..  anyone can just play with a pick.

If you end up doing that, listen to the guy from the Smiths.. he played with a pick, I think, and his bass lines were sick.. but not too complicated to learn once you get acquainted with the instrument.

If I learn to play the bass I would want to use fingers moreso than a pick..
