I did a Google search for free web hosting and I came across a list of sites offering free hosting--just like that! Wow. But before I go and randomly sign up for free web hosts I was wondering if anyone could provide more info on them. I was basically looking for a more effective alternative to rapidshare/imageshack, if you know what I mean.

There's no such thing as 'free' web hosting, someone pays for the bandwidth just maybe not you. For this reason you'll probably always find it's crippled in some way... someone who offers commercial quality web hosting for free won't be in business very long. With that said I recommend http://www.freebitty.com/main/, 1GB storage and 5GB transfers with no ads is about the very best you can hope to find without paying.
