What's a good Linux Operating system for a beginner

Well? I have no experience with linux. My brother is getting a new laptop and we're looking for an OS. I said Linux and he wants to try it.


What's with REDHAT, Suse, TurboLinux.... any other reccommendations?

Ubuntu is prolly the one that is recommended, ive tried it, and its really easy to catch on to, and easy to install. But there are many others that are good, and possible to figure out if your dedicated enough.

Ubuntu or even Gentoo. Most distros have a LiveCD these days, and you can boot right into a GUI, and with a few commands you'll be off and running with a terminal.

i just dl and setup ubuntu... not too bad so far.

very new to me.. not too sure how to setup/install programs..

trying to install aim and i'm a bit lost.

Open up Synaptic and search for Trillian.

Or go to the command line... and try "sudo apt-get install trillian"

That should work... if not try "sudo apt-get search trillian" and see if anything comes up.

There isn't any release of Trillian for Linux as far as I'm aware.

And the new version of Gaim is called Pidgin.

apt-get install pidgin

I though fedora was pretty damn cool, but it seems like nobody out there is using it in this forum. Anybody want to comment on Fedora (new redhat)? I could get it to play divx and mp3's and file share with my other windows partitions and file share on a network with windows machines. It also had a lot of good documenting softwares, but those are probably available on all linux versions.

pidgin is not in the ubuntu repos, so he won't be able to install it that way. gaim is, and it'll be fine.

Ubuntu is probably the best distro that is easy to use.

I have been running a slackware ONLY box since December 2005. It's a bit trickier but it is very stable and fast.
