the term 'linux' is crappy. properly, you'd call it Gnu/Linux as linux is only the kernely.

also, there are a tons of different varieties of *nix.

(running Debian Gnu/Linux here)

debian/freebsd/hp-ux/IOS/OSX 10.4/Windows2000srv,xp,2003srv,2003websrv at work

windows 2000 at home (used to have debian, but the GL support for my ATI card was sucky)

also, there are a tons of different varieties of *nix.

that's why i didn't really bother listing them all individually.

i mainly use debian gnu/linux (testing), but i also have desktopbsd, which is just freebsd integrated with kde, on a small partition to play around with.

Windblows XP at the moment. Unfortunately, my school requires that their virus scan software be installed on every computer in order to function, so I don't think I could get away with having Linux right now. But I plan on making the switch as soon as I get out.

that's really only possible if you're connecting to the internet through their network. do you live in university housing?

there has got to be some way that you can connect using linux or a unix. what school do you go to?

what do they do about mac users?

you don't realize how restrictive windows is until you use something else. when you use windows, you aren't using your computer; you're using windows. when you run linux you really have total control. you use the machine. everything just makes sense and gets done right.

I rarely ever use Windows...I usually try to get WINE to run most of my windows programs on nix..
The only time I us DOS 6.0..Is when I us the C++ compiler "Sphinx C"..it's so damn stable

I know I'm one of several Science & Techers who run Gentoo. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet. Gentoo is to most other distros as Linux in general is to Windows.

I've been wanting to do a gentoo installation, but I've been way to busy to sit down & do it right. a LFS installation would be pretty sweet as well - from what I've read about it.

kubuntu may become my new main OS. i'm really liking it.

i've steered away from gentoo and only used freebsd a little because waiting for things to compile isn't something i'm really into. LFS seems like a neat idea, but although i do like tinkering and i do like learning, that just seems like way too much time and effort. my computer's supposed to work for me, not the other way around!

yeah, a gentoo or lfs installation would be just a hobby for me - something to teach me more about linux. but the "easier" installations like ubuntu would be my primary os. but right now, I am just way to busy to mess around.

if you didnt know, the new version of k/ubuntu (breezy) will be released on the 16th - should be pretty good.

Ubuntu on my laptop, WinXP on my desktop. As soon as a good Linux distro has decent user-friendly MIDI/sound support, it's goodbye to Windows forever!

alright it's settled. kubuntu is my new choice. this is how debian should be. the debian project seems to have an idea of technical correctness that they like to stick to. compared to k/ubuntu, it's like they are making a linux for the  simple sake of making a linux... it's supposed to be *academically correct*. k/ubuntu is debian for the user. the power of debian polished up and user friendly.

anybody play around with SUSE 10.0 yet?...The security in it is unbeatable...

Also the addition of BEAGLE and YAST is a major plus in my book...They have built a fully packed functioning OS that outsurpasses Win...It is also one of the most stable OS's iv'e seen in a long time...It is truly flawless

At the moment, yes I do. And since it's about 3 years old, I don't think anyone's going to be writing any more drivers for it. If and when I get a chance to build another computer, I'll definitely shop with having a dual boot system in mind.

try booting a live cd. you can boot linux off a cd without even touching your hard drive. it's a good way to test out-of-the-box hardware support.

Aw man, Where is the choice for BeOS? That's not fair! Just because it's dead doesn't mean it's no good. :-)

Very polished. I am running the 64 bit edition and it is fully supported just as well as the 32 bit is.

I had to vote all of the above.

My workstation (at work) is windows, my laptop is osx, my firewall is freebsd (unix) and all the non-windows servers I manage are debian. >.>

That counts right?

i run gentoo. i have run ubuntu, mandrake, freebsd, debian, fedora core, knoppix, and probably a few others i forget at the moment. there are tons of arguements for and against each, i started with gento and it taught me alot, as did friends link vampire999, link, and suffer.

i use fluxbox with getoo. i like fluxbox because it is easy to install a program through gentoo's portahe system, have it compile just for the hardware and flags you use, and easily add it to the menu in the place you want. i use components of kde and gnome.
