How do animals know to look you in the eye?

Like when you're petting a dog, talking to a parrot, pretty much any animal that's capable of giving some sort of response to your actions.  It's like they know to make eye contact.  I always determined that to be a human trait, so I'm curious.  :strokebeard:

that is a good question. loyal dogs will try to always keep their head lower then yours too.

It's always been a way of animals to know for sure if the other animal senses their presence. Eyes can also betray intentions and moods. It definitely developed long before humans existed.  It's no more 'human' than running from something that scares you.

because somewhere in their line of thinking they "understand" and "comprehend" that the eyes of most creatures are the main window of perception.

it's probably completely hardwired into the brains of most higher organisms, at least on land. the facial structure across species lines is pretty similar, mouth on the bottom, nose in the middle, and two eyes on top of that. even most fish and birds share it, probably an action learned from millions of years of the same traits over and over again being expressed (the face)

of course they do! they're live, sentient beings. Dogs can convey a universe of emotion through eye movements, just like we can.

They know where your eyes are and look. Don't think animals are retarded: within their kinds they are mature adults capable of independent life.

Funny when a guest strokes and pets your cat and then it walks up to you and you pet it with your feet. They'll go to the bathroom for an excuse to wash their hands :lol:

That's cool, I didn't know about that.

Cats are interesting animals, and I've always enjoyed having a cat to watch and play with. They are remarkably intelligent, in their own ways.

Cats can even "see" with their whiskers! The part of their brain that gets input from the whiskers is more like the area of a cats brain devoted to vision than anything else. If you watch a slowed down video of a cat about to chomp on some prey, they move their whiskers out in a circle around their moth at the last second so that they know where to put their mouth.

Here's something interesting... Eyes do more than I thought about...

Animals can't say "The food is over there", but they do look and growl. Other animals can tell what's gonna get eaten and where it is.

It also said that 6 month old human babies have that. They can tell where an adult face is looking, and they will try to match your gaze.

That's the way it seems to be with any pet, especially cats.  I used to think they were pricks because they always act all high and mighty but if you're the one that feeds them they'll answer to their name if you call them. :yesnod:
