pickling lime? and alcohol dispenser...

Hi, newly registered aspiring mycologist here, and I have a couple questions.

First one, is pickling lime the same thing as hydrated lime? I searched and found this,

"Horticultural lime, also called hydrated lime or Ca(OH)2 is produced by adding water to CaO.

Quick lime is CaO, a very aggressive substance. It is produced from CaCO3 containing limestone or shellsand by heating it to 1200°C, hereby CO2 is driven off the CaCO3 molecule, leaving CaO."

I have a bottle of pickling lime that I picked up in the canning section of Wal-Mart. I was going to use it in in my casing layer, in the same ratio suggested of hydrated lime. Anyone know, would that work? Is pickling lime Ca(OH)2? does it work? or is it CaO and ruinous?

edit: I think I may have found the answer to this one. http://www.canningpantry.com/pickling-lime.html is what I have, and on the website it says it's food grade calcium hydroxide. So I assume it will work in a casing layer... unless I'm missing something.

Second question, from watching RR's video: where would I get/where can I order one of those alcohol dispensers that you squeeze to emit a small stream for sterilization of plastic gloves prior to glove box work? That device seemed really useful, and I want one. I usually just pour the alcohol out of the bottle and get it all over the place.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help.

I think i know what your talking about.

this is how you can make one though: Screw cap on tight to the bottle containing the alchol. poke small hole with a nail.(make it small,start small work up to the desired size) now you have on just leave cap on and squeeze bottle and a stream of alchol will come out

pickling lime IS the same thing, but from what i hear, it's harder to get the measurements right for it. but i believe you can use it if you're careful

I would suggest horticultural hydrated lime over pickling lime. You can order it from best hardware at www.doitbest.com if you can't find it locally. Type hydrated lime into the site search when you get there.

I got the squeeze bottles from an industrial chemical supply company. You can find similar online by doing a search for 'squeeze bottle'.

jccc, that was a really great idea on the homemade squeeze bottle.  It works perfect.  I just heated up a large (relatively) nail and made a hole in the cap of a bottle of 91% isopropyl, then cut off the thumb of a latex glove as a cover for it to avoid too much evaporation when not in use.  That should be a tek alongside the home-made alcohol lamp.

I did a little glovebox work last night hydrating a spore print, and got to try it out :thumbup:.

Sounds good man.

Be sure when working with spores that you're really careful with the cleanliness of your work area in general. It is such a downer when you go through tons of work to make syringes only to have contaminates.

I try to keep the entire room as clean as possible, the use of a recirculating HEPA filter helps much, and are available for around 50$ or so locally.
