lime might also be sold as pickling lime at walmart or grocery store.  if you're using straw lime is not a necessity but it helps.  good luck

Just try coir 60% and vermiculite 40% at field capacity and don't worry about lime & shells.

I should have read this a bit closer, and asked if you're seeking lime to do a lime bath on straw? If so, get standard agricultural lime at the garden center...it's calcium carbonate.

I can't answer what "straw lime" is?

As for 60/40 and the alledged pH problems ect, haven't found it a drama. Here's a tray well into retirement on 7th flush and half-arse cared for in a shopping bag. No lime/shells to it and no acidity problems.

In fact, I've found adding lime/shells to a 60/40 is a great way to screw it up. It blocks up the all important air filled porosity spaces of the casing with fines. It then gets really clay-dense and the substrate respiring underneath can't breath. Then it becomes anerobic and the substrate cops a bacterial contamination. I don't suggest you do it. Here's a pic of such a screw up. Note the over-lay on the peripheral of the casing and how there's no mycelium coming through the central zone.

As for agricultural lime, get straight calcium carbonate (if you're out to pH up straw?). Used shit loads in the past up'ing the pH on turf due to the acidifying of sulphate of ammonia tweaking the greens. Very common stuff, comes in various grades. Get the finest grade you can. Hit the garden centre for it.

BTW, the stuff you're talking about that has magnesium sulphate in it, is called dolomite. Don't get that, unless you have a mg deficiency in your yard plants.

My findings on 60/40 is it's fine by itself without lime/shells pH up additions. Please re-read my post ^above again. In addition, I have in my post history discussed my findings on coir/verm in terms of pH. Use the search engine. But remember, sources of coir differ. Hint: experiment.

I haven't done that (aside read out of curiousity), so I can't comment. Though there are answers in the FAQ on the subject (read up) and you can always start a thread specifically asking about it to tweak your results.
