The Fountain and Pan's Labyrinth
    #6987962 -

I was kind of disappointed with both of these movies. Maybe I had really high expectations, but I just felt like they both could have done a lot more with the given plot and edited out a lot of non-sequitur plot-fluff.

While the cinematography was amazing in both of these films, I just felt that they were both poop.

You hit the nail right on the head.

The Fountain seemed to be a movie that started near the end of a story?

The fountain sucked and I haven't found time to pop pan's labyrinth in. I'm dreading reading all the subtitles. I'm getting the feeling I was wasteful in buying them.

I thought the fountain had a great concept, as well as looked visually stunning at times, but it was directionless.

There have been movies that I didnt "get", but I knew that I had to watch them a few more times, with the fountain, i just feel like there is nothing to "get" beyond making up your own story... like the movie gave me a good idea to think about, but that was it.

i agree about pans labrynth not the fountain.

pan's could have done SO much more with the fascinating fantasy world, yet it dwelled to long on the depressing spanish war setting.

************SPOILER**************

that part with the skinny white creature with eyes on its hand was just insane. more shit like that and that movie would have been fucking awesome.

I loved the Fountain, and I loved Pan Labyrinth up until the last minute, which was too saccharine sweet.

Yes, Pan's Labyrinth sucks.
Seemed a bit short story.

(Re: Pan's Labyrinth) It was a little heavy at the end, but I think it worked within the context of the movie as a final point of contrast. And to whomever said it spent too much time in the "real" world, I think that worked as well, it made the transitions to the fantasy setting more compelling and poignant. That poor girl's only escape from a hellish reality was into another realm that in it's own way was just as dark and twisted. Brilliant, really.

As for The Fountain, what can one say? You either get it and like it or you don't. It's genius. It's intensely powerful and moving. In the other thread I said it was like being punched in the face with sadness and tragedy, well I was being kinda lazy in my "review". The reason The Fountain is so amazing it that it hits you hard with that sense of loss and grief that Jackman's character portrays, but then it shows the even greater power of acceptance and grace. Really, this movie is like a trip where you can learn a lot if you just pay attention.

Oh and the soundtrack? Best movie sound track ever. Period. Bar none, end of discussion, etc.

I got it, but it was just really really depressing. Not letting the dead go really screws things up for the living. It was sad. I don't like sad movies.

If you had "gotten" the movie, I can't help but think you wouldn't have come off thinking it was just a sad movie. Watch it again.

My take on The Fountain

Pan's Labyrinth was good, but not great. I was expecting sort of a XXX sort of Jim Henson's "Labyrinth" but it wasn't. It hardly even went into the "fantasy" realm. There were a few scenes, which were amazing, but far too much of the real world.

I recommend eating some psychedelics and listening to the soundtrack in full. I think that will help explain the movie too, which is pretty amazing. The score really harmonizes and accentuates the emotional resonance of the movie.

The wife & I had taken some 2ci and were listening to the soundtrack while taking a bath. I was crying like a fucking baby, hah.

Man Pan's Labyrinth was a complete work of something real bad and horrible.

usually the effects are employed to accentuate the story. In this movie it seemed the story was only there to provide a reason for effects. Like we are some little children who are to be easily amazed with gimmicks and frills. I want meat with my Gorgonzola sauce. I love good effects as much as any man, but I want a story I can sink my teeth into. I want to personalities and struggles. I want to see a rising action and plot. Then throw the fucking cherry on top and call it denouement.

I was completely disappointed with the amount of time that actually took place in the labyrinth. I mean why didn't the call it "Pan paces back and forth in the little girl's bed room berating her for eating cherry tomatoes and waking up the cool looking monster with amazing hand eye coordination"?

Did you see that ending. It would have been much cooler if Pan had of just grabbed the little girl, screamed at the top of his longs "you fail at life", then shoved her in his mouth and proceeded to eat her. Instead she shows up in some wack ass hall, with the king, her "real father", and mother sitting in some chairs saying how proud they are of her. Bwaahahaahahahaa. What a dreadful letdown.
It was a real shame.

We should have known better, cause when we went to get it from Wal-Mart, they were like, "you guys do know its in Spanish right?". All the illiterate Wal Mart Ghoulies were like "don't get it, its in Spanish. Don't its isn't even in English." Like some psycho took it home and found out he had to read subtitles then came back to Wal Mart and caused a horrible to do. God what a fucking letdown.

end of rant.

What the fuck does it being in Spanish have ANYTHING to do with how good or bad it is? some of the best films of the last five years have come from Mexico.
