Retire or Reincarnate dead user names?
    #6962231 -

As the shroomery grows, and I am one of those lunatics that thinks it Will continue to grow after many of us are dead and gone, most of the cool user names will be used up. After a while some body will want to assume the name of a user who has died. Will names be recycled or retired?

I think we should do it like professional sports teams do with numbers. Retire the numbers of some, and recycle the numbers of many. If somebody has the name TripBalz and has not been seen since 2001 when he made 2 posts, then perhaps his name could be recycled, with a unique user number of course. However, when somebody like Mjshroomer departs this earthly realm in twenty or thirty years I think his name should be retired.

Discuss.

I guess it makes sense, but it's probably a fair bit of work to implement.  And how?  Admins go through the thousands of names and erase accounts for users with cool names on the offchance that somebody is going to want to use it?

And we aren't always aware of members dying... I'm sure some of the users who have stopped posting have done so because they are dead.  But how do we know?

A hall of fame of some kind would be cool... maybe with a list of cool posts or teks by that user ... I dunno :ohwell:

Wouldn't this be very exhaustive to implement, considering how many thousands of users we have registered? Who would be deciding what to retire and what to recycle? I hope they get paid well to do it. :grin:

A while ago we expired all the unused accounts with zero posts, but reincarnating used but abandoned accounts is more of a challenge. What would you propose we do with the posts made by those users before they left the site?

Mark them anonymous and add them to the great "DoNotDelete" account.

Hardly exhaustive to implement.  One simply needs to set the proper constraints...  Some psuedocode for example:
[something is wrong with the [ code ] tags as I keep getting blank entries]
Quote:
nSecondsInYear = (60 * 60 * 24 * 365);
JOIN_THRESHOLD = time() - (nSecondsInYear * 3);
SEEN_THRESHOLD = time() - (nSecondsInYear * 2);
POST_THRESHOLD = 100;
theList = users->FetchAllWhere("join_date < {JOIN_THRESHOLD} AND last_seen < {SEEN_THRESHOLD} AND post_count < {POST_THRESHOLD}");
foreach (theList as user)
{
    if (ShouldRetire(user))
    {
        Retire(user);
    }
    else
    {
        Recycle(user);
    }
}

And then set up whatever kind of logic is necessary to determine the candidacy for Retireship and voila.  The script wouldn't even need to do anything but flag the members it thinks are up for retirement and the ones it thinks are up for recycling and then an Admin can check it out and make the final decision before allowing it to happen.

It'll be interesting when someone reads a post two years later and half of the replies are by "DONOTDELETE". :rolleyes:

People can always just add a number after the name they want. I'm pretty sure we won't be running out of names anytime soon.

And, then, you will always have the people who come back and find that their name was reincarnated instead of retired. Sounds like one HUGE mess to me. :shrug:

You're missing the point, silly. The numbers in my psuedocode were arbitrary to make a point. It would be more like after 10 or 20 years than 2.

My objection to the idea is that it destroys data. If someone's name is retired and their posts are set to anonymous, then you can no longer search on that user, ignore them, etc. If this is really an issue, I think a better solution would be to append 'Inactive' to abandoned usernames instead of deleting them. That way they're still distinct accounts but the original name can be re-registered.

That isn't how I understand what is being proposed; Retired users will be flagged so that they never come up for recycling, this leaves their data and everything intact FOREVERS. Appending something such as "Inactive" to a name would be the most ideal way to implement recycling. Anyone not retired will be up for recycling once the necessary conditions are met. Simple.

what about just renaming the dead users with the year of their last post.

I think its weird when I see a certain moderator with one of my old names hahaha but whatever. Seriously who gives a crap. and like mjshroomer really is a good example .. I dont think anyone would want his name.

The thing that pisses me off is I cant keep the same name for security reasons and then you lose forum privlages. ;P

> My objection to the idea is that it destroys data

Exactly, any way such a system would be implemented would involve corrupting/breaking lots of search features and continuities, both internal and external.

It also exacerbates the problem it attempts to resolve.

The problem explained seems to be:

i) people choose generic user names (like 'shrooms' or 'drugs')

ii) those generic user names then cannot be re-used by other people

Surely if you fix stage two, you just encourage people to do more of stage one? What are the chances that the next person to sign up with the username 'drugs' is going to be an active member of the forums with thousands of posts? Are they high enough to justify a fairly complex new system of name recycling that might potentially break lots of other features? Wouldn't it be better to just encourage people to choose less generic user names? Add to that the fact that I'm sure lots of people will work out when desirable names are due to expire, then attempt to grab them when they become available, leading to puppets, or people abandoning their original username, which in turn takes up more of the available name space.

My username is a compound of two dictionary words, and it is as of writing globally unique. I'm the only hit for it on Google. If it's possible to combine two dictionary words and create a globally unique identifier, we're not in danger of running out of username material any time soon. The name space is large enough, we don't need this system.

Thanks Odium you pretty much summarized my thoughts exactly. I might consider such a system if there was massive demand for it, but I would never like it.

And by the way people do return to the site after being absent for many years, and want their old accounts back. I get support tickets all the time from old members who forgot their password and don't have their registered e-mail address anymore. For this reason alone I think the change would anger more people than it satisfies.

Untrue. You can certainly implement a system that does not lose any data, does not corrupt any data, and does not break any search features and continuities, if you wish.

The scale here is NOT a couple of years, though. Couple of decades. Half a century.

I wonder what the Shroomery will be like in 2050. The only names left will be unwanted ones like "Yanni" and "Oprah"
