Exactly, any way such a system would be implemented would involve corrupting/breaking lots of search features and continuities, both internal and external.

It also exacerbates the problem it attempts to resolve.

I get support tickets all the time from old members who forgot their password and don't have their registered e-mail address anymore. For this reason alone I think the change would anger more people than it satisfies.
