Psilocybe Cyanescens on Cypress Mulch
    #697536 - 06/24/02 02:18 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

I'm looking for info on using cypress chips/mulch as a substrate for ps. cyans. Any info would be great.

it won't work!
you need a non aromatic-resinous wood, like alder, fagus, oak etc...

All the mulches in Toronto seem to be the ones I can't use for my cyanescens. I have been forced to search for alternatives. At Petsmart, I found KAYTEE Aspen shavings used as bedding and litter. It specifically states no aromatic oils. I feel it will be perfect and although I have not used it, I read a tek recommending it. It comes in large bales, and is a bit more expensive but I believe it will be the best. I read a tek saying the cyanescens likes wood shavings like those from a plane. The bedding is made from very fine shavings designed to grab and hold water. They are very heavy once they are soaked.

sounds good.
be sure you can compress the shavings, the have a tendency to pack loosely, resulting in a large gap for the mycelium to ?jump?..

good luck

Hey OM--I have those very same bails outside, I think we're experiencing the same difficulty. I had a lead on some freshly chipped alder, but that fell through. . .the only thing available to consumers is CEDAR. People like it BECAUSE it snuffs most everything else out. If you try hunting alder down from utility companies/government agencies, it's a long, unproductive time spent on the phone.

The thing with the kaytee stuff is that it seems to small of a chip size for actual fruiting. I think you need to top it off with something. Soil+grassy plants might be an option. Stamets has something in GGMM about shavings not being the best for final fruiting sub, that the chip size should be larger and variable, a few inches for the big chunks.
Many of the cyans around here fruit just fine off of soil-covered chips, IF there's enough grassy stuff.
