PHOENIX -- A number of mothers in the Phoenix area admit they use marijuana to wind down after a long day, television station KPHO reported.

Shay Pausa surveyed hundreds of mothers through her Web site, Chikii.com. She targeted women in affluent suburban areas.

"These were middle to upper-middle class women, professional women, mommies. We had some that were members of the PTA and one school teacher even reported," Pausa said.

They're women like Jan, who's 30 and has one child.

"I like it just to relax, if I'm very stressed out and I just need some time, just to relax. It's good for that," Jan said.

Sue is 37 and has two kids.

"But I've also used it for headaches. I've used it when I've been sick with the stomach flu, when I've been really nauseous and, I mean, I need to function. So it's in my medicine cabinet," Sue said.

Of the hundreds of mothers Pausa surveyed, 52 percent said they smoke pot at least 10 times a year.

Twenty-seven percent said they smoke it one to seven times a week.

Some of the women even said they would someday tell their kids about their secret. That's what most concerns some anti-drug groups.

"So what kind of message is that sending to a child? If it's OK to smoke pot in the house, is it OK to steal? Bottom line, it's illegal," said Sarah Christiansen of NotMyKid.org.

So where do the women get marijuana? Some said they drop hints among friends until they find one that shares the habit. Others said they grow it themselves.

Show them and tell them about the side effects and consequences of over indulging. Not just on drugs but with life in general. Teach them about addiction, how some thing can take over. I'd teach them how to deal with life instead of getting fucked up.

It's these kind of studies that bother me, somewhat. Why is it so alarming that parents are doing drugs? It's been in our culture for decades; hell, Reefer Madness came out in 1936(or 38, but somewhere in there), saying that marijuana was an issue. If you look at that, it's not a stretch to see that your grandparents could be doing it. This isn't something new, and I'm not sure when our society suddenly became innocent and starting pointing fingers at parents who smoke a little ganj now and then. I say, it probably makes them better parents, because they're using that as a tool for stress relief over freaking out at their kids, but that's just me.

It may be possible, and I imagine that is why the women in the interview were in silhouette and remained unnamed.  It is in a journalists interest to protect his or her sources, so they undoubtedly won't have to worry about her turning them in.

I was at the local hamburger joint in Hollywood this morning with the ladyfriend, flipping through the pages of LA Weekly, a huge free publication here in Los Angeles with editorials, movie reviews, and a large calendar/activities section... not to mention copious advertisements for plastic surgery and liposuction   ... but what caught my eye today was a full two page layout in there dedicated to medical marijuana advertising, dispensaries and state-licensed practitioners that offer prescriptions.  I haven't before seen that in such a public publication, and it made me smile.
