I do think it's unacceptable, but I don't think it represents a problem that is everywhere in every school requiring us to panic. I don't think it's new desensitizing for a police state either.

i'm not suggesting this is a matter to panic about, actually, i believe panic in itself is futile.

but it does make me question the reasons for bringing a potential child to the world in what i here call specifically a culture of fear.

Did it ever occur to you that the goal of this exercise (misguided though it is) was the exact OPPOSITE of a culture of fear?

Think of the "duck and cover" drills of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. In the event of actual thermonuclear war, especially against massive Soviet warheads, getting under your desk, or covering your face with your jacket isn't going to do a damn thing.

Yet the drills were created to make kids feel like they could control a situation which in reality was completely beyond them. By making them think (falsely) that there was something you could do to be "safe" during the end of the world, the kids did not have to live in constant fear.

Why should this be any different? I disagree with it, but if the goal is to make the kids feel like they could actually survive a school shooting, and thus not fear one anymore, perhaps the hearts of these teachers were actually in the right place. (Albeit not their minds, this was clearly poorly thought out and executed)

it has, however i feel that creating a false sense of safety is not the ideal way to help dissolve fearful thought and behavior, especially in pre-adolescents.

while it may have been of good intention to directly familiarize the children with a life threatening situation, i can only see the results of this particular exercise contributing to an overall atmosphere of mistrust and paranoia.

fear only breeds more fear.

if teachers are going to bring the reality of fear to light, then IMO it is only going to work through honesty and trust.

I was thinking wouldn't it have been ironic if it was done in a highschool and some 16 year old kid starts blasting the teachers with guns, until he realizes they aren't real.
