scarification techniques

i've recently become interested in scarification.
I was wondering what techniques are normally used?
I would think branding would be a pretty good one.
I had a little scar on my arm shaped like a flower stem so I took a cigarette butt while i was tripping at the Modest Mouse concert at The Backyard here in austin and burnt a nice circle at one of the stem to make it look like a flower...it's still healing but I think it will come out nice. i was thinking i might want to get something done professionally but i don't know what.

or incorporate a tatoo with a scar....like outline on or the other or have some kind of transition between the two....i don't know...infinite possibilities

To each his own. But intentionally scarring yourself is undeniably retarded, in my opinion. I have a problem with minor cuts scarring too much, so I don't see why anybody would pay to put one on them.

I think they can look good if you go to the right people. I wouldn't do it personally, but I have seen some that look very well done.

My friend got a cutting of three hearts of differing sizes (largest on top, smallest on bottom) on her chest. It looked really good. I'm not expert as I haven't really been into the whole body mod scene for a couple years now (I don't even have any, I just used to read about it all the fucking time), but I'm pretty sure all types of scarification require a lot of after care. More than piercings or tattoos. It also doesn't feel good (squirting lemon juice in the cuts and shit so it scars better.) So be aware that if you want the best chances to have it turn out good you will need to put work and pain into it. Also know that there is a chance that even if you do all of the aftercare required that it still might not turn out that well.

i think they look pretty sick when they are fresh... but i really dislike the look after they've healed...

I find scarification very intriguing. I think I'd be much more inclined to get scarification than a tattoo. Can they combo scarification AND tattoos? Like do the cut and rub ink in? That could be cool looking. I'm thinking of getting a 5x5 inch design on my back between my shoulder blades.

... Wonder how much it runs and how hard it is to find a scarification artist? Couldn't be that hard in NYC, right?

No, it shouldn't be a problem. We had at least one in Syracuse, so I'm assuming there's plenty in NYC. Obviously make sure you look at pictures of their art and talk to anyone first hand who had them do it and ask them questions. (If you're looking to get it done.)

I'm not sure about the incorporation of tattoos and scars. I've seen work that uses both, but none that I recall that are a tattoo on a scar. Either way, I would ask the artist about that and look to see other works if they say they're done it.

How much does it usually run? I'd imagine more than tattoos because it's rare and there are greater health risks involved.

Edit: TameMe... I haven't done much (er, any) research on it. Why not the cutting method? Are other methods more effective? I'm not worried about the pain, I'm worried about it healing up completely and having nothing to show for it.

Hmm, I can't be sure on that. I don't know if it would be too much more than a tattoo. Health risks shouldn't increase price, that wouldn't make much sense. I also don't know how much more skill it takes, so it may or may not be too expensive. I don't imagine it'd be ridiculous, though.
