Can a cop shoot you just for running?

My roommate seems to think this is true. No matter what I tell him he will not believe this is not true. I cant seem to find any answers on the internet. Can someone help?

Their not supposed too but they can if they feel like it. Once your dead they just call one of their buddies to bring a hot gun if they dont have one already and they plant it on you.

Whether or not they can doesn't really matter. They'd probably do it anyways and then get away with it somehow. The law is on their side.

They're not supposed to, but when they do they tend to get away with it.  They must know people in law enforcement or something :smirk:

The question wasn't "will they" it was "can they." They can. Maybe they're not supposed to, but they can get away with it. In fact, they will, too. Read the link I posted. If the story is true, then I think it was reasonable to shoot him. The problem is though, who knows if that's what really happened.

If the question is "will they" then I would say that most the time they wont especially if your white and didnt do something crazy wrong like shoot one of their cop friends. Also most of them cant hit the broad side of a barn but not all of them. Some are incredibly good shooters some of the best but their the minority. I would say a regular redneck who has a back stop in his backyard and shoots frequently can shoot better then a oinker.

One of my friends from high school was shot in the back by an off duty cop in our hometown. He was unnarmed and non-violent. The man killed him and the police protected him for 2 years, after two years, all they could do is press civil charges for wrongful death, and get some money.

a couple summers ago there was a big investigation into something like this in my city. a cop pulled over some pizza guy, and as he approached his window to issue him a speeding ticket, the pizza guy floors it. well the cop freaked out and shot him through the window in the back of the head and paralyzed him for life.

anyways..i think the cop resigned but was not criminally charged. might have gotten off with self-defense tho because the vehicle could have hit him.

it's a stretch, but i could see a lawyer arguing that if he turned too sharply as he pulled away he could have hit the cop, or at least ran over his foot.

He thinks they can legaly shoot someone just for runing. I have watched cops many times, and they always say "Stop or I will shoot". I thought this was just a scare tactic.
