Cannabis cash 'funds Islamist terrorism'

Cannabis smokers are unwittingly funding Islamist extremists linked to terror attacks in Spain, Morocco and Algeria, according to a joint investigation by the Spanish and French secret services. The finding will be seized on both by campaigners for a harsher clampdown on cannabis and by those who argue that legalisation is the only way to end a petty dealing trend that is dragging growing numbers of teenagers into crime.

The investigation by the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia and the Renseignements Generaux was launched after Spanish police found that the Islamists behind the March 2004 bombings in Madrid bought their explosives from former miners in return for blocks of hashish. The bombings claimed 191 lives.

Spain's role as a transit point for drugs was highlighted last week when Madrid hosted the US Drug Enforcement Agency's annual conference. Experts heard not only that North African hashish was funding terrorism in Europe, but also that West Africa had become a new hub for South American cocaine shipments bound for Europe.

Morocco is the world's leading cannabis exporter, with an annual crop estimated to be worth at least £2bn. Last month, the Moroccan navy seized three tonnes of Europe-bound hashish off the Mediterranean port of Nador. The same week, Spanish coastguards seized 4.3 tonnes of Moroccan resin off Ibiza.

The joint secret service investigation finds that hashish is part of a 'complex financing network' serving the Algeria-based Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, affiliated since last year to al-Qaeda. The group claimed responsibility for two bombings in Algiers on 11 April that killed 30 people and left 200 injured.

French terrorism expert Dominique Thomas said the link between drug dealing and Islamic terrorism was not new: 'The issue stands at the core of divisions within al-Qaeda between those who believe that the end justifies the means and others who argue that drugs are incompatible with Islam.'

I fixed the headline... obviously, it was a typo...  :rolleyes:

If cannabis were legal, then there would be no black market, thus there would be no funds going to terrorism.  It is the war on drugs that funds "Islamist" terrorism.  (I wonder how the Christian terrorists manage to avoid drug money, since it is clear that only Islamic terrorists benefit from the black market trade of illegal drugs?)

The U.S. government has inadvertently supplied more terrorist funds than pot smokers so there. And we can never forget the US trained Osahma and put Saddamm in power so it's all the US governments fault not pot smokers

I'm not agreeing with the article, the best solution to this is to legalize the stuff so more is grown locally, and oil is a MUCH larger funder (so far 300,000,000 barrels of oil have gone missing from Iraq, stolen by insurgents). Still though, I think this article at least proves that one sale of cannabis can be linked to a terrorist attack. Nothing to feel guilty about of course, they make it sound like all cannabis directly funds terrorism when it was really just a few cases.

I would be glad to know that my pot money is going to kill thousands of people. We have far too many in this world and I'm sure the great majority of those killed oppose my freedom to smoke cannabis anyways.

Propaganda isn't just about lying, it's also deliberately spreading information in such a way that it misrepresents the truth. So I think you just answered your own question:

I'm sure they money the government takes from me in the form of taxes goes to fund more murder than any money I spend on drugs.

Hell, if the government legalized and taxed drugs they money would probably support the terroristic "war on terror"...id have a hard time smoking a blunt and thinking I just helped kill some innocent durka durka because they believe different than my government (id get over it real quick though :lol: )

I see drug users spouting off like this so often that it makes me rethink whether I should really be supporting drug decriminalization/legalization. Maybe legalization would be a huge mistake and would result in throngs of anti-social anarchists imagining that our government is going around murdering innocent people just because of their beliefs -- but at the same time terrorism is BS. I'd like to think that drug legalization (and the corresponding expanded use of certain drugs) would be good for society, but maybe I'm wrong.

Do drugs make people act this way, or are people like this just attracted to drugs? Does long-term drug use destroy one's ability to control their cynicism and put things into perspective?

Why do so many drug users insist on making society their enemy? That is the true reason that drugs became illegal and why they stay illegal. When/if that changes, so will the drug laws.

On the topic of this article, the fact that hashish was used to obtain the explosives used in the terror attack that killed 191 people is worth noting. And rather than seizing on this opportunity to call your government murderous terrorists, you could use this opportunity to illustrate how our drug laws are counterproductive when it comes to our safety:
