The NBA just seems so subjective....

I dont know, I dont watch basketball often.

But it seems to me that the whole refereeing is just SO subjective. I mean, I can see a foul on almost every play. But the ref's seem to just call them when they want to. It almost seems like it has an air of illegitimacy to it.

I mean...How can any fan honestly say there isn't potential for these things to be fixed?

You're a baseball fan, try and tell me the strike zone isn't the same thing.

All sports have subjective rules, it's part of every game.

IMO the NBA has given preferential officiating treatment to its cash cows for decades now! (Shaq, Jordan, Magic and Bird)


Star players like Jordan get favorable calls and could do anything they wanted as long as it was not flagrant.

And The bigger-market teams get bigger breaks.

Maybe the NBA is just giving the fans what they want. kinda like WWF/WWE

This is true but you can't get kicked out of the game for having strikes called against you. In basketball they call two quick ghost fouls against a star player at the beginning of the game and then he has to sit out the rest of the half on the bench. It also seems in basketball that some refs hold grudges against certain players and are way to eager to get them in foul trouble early.

Players are also guilty of holding grudges with refs, don't let them let you think any different. While I'm not professional basketball player, when I played sports in high school there were refs I did and didn't like, and sometimes while you're playing you can't help but to make it obvious, and they remember. Refs rarely, if ever, start it in my experience.

You're right though, baseball players won't get thrown out for having a shitty strike, they'll just have a strike in the count. Both are disadvantages, but I guess fouling out is more serious. Unfortunately there's no real alternative.

also you cant compare a foul and a strike besides the fact that they are both subjective calls by the official.. a foul involves you physically obstructing another player from scoring whereas a strike is simply 1 player out playing another player for 1 set play.

But a foul and a strike both have definitions, but the interpretations of those definitions is subjective. I think they can definitely be compared for the purpose of this thread.

Oh, and as you know, not all fouls prevent people from scoring. And a strike is NOT always one player out playing another, in the case of a bad call it's quite the opposite.

right but you get the general idea of what im saying.. with a foul it involves physical contact.

if a pitcher continually hits a batter with the ball he is kicked from the game as well.

i see the comparison and i get what the agrument is... i just enjoy agruing as well :smile:

i was mainly referring to whoever said something like "but in baseball you cant be taken away from the game due to the subjectiveness of the calls"

its completely relevent.. people were referring to how a subjective call in basketball could land a star player on the bench early in the game.

And even if it doesn't land a player on the bench, when you get in foul trouble you start playing less aggressively; not guarding as tightly on defense, not driving to the bucket as strongly or as much.

I think everyone here knows I'm a Bulls fan though, and my team is doing quite well at the moment, so this is not a "OMG MY TEAM WAS SCR3WED" thread.

I just think the whole officiating deal is kind of bunk...

I hate some officials. Mainly the ones that pick on my team. That short white bald dude seems like he has a bias toward the Mavs. He's also a faggot.
