You can't be fucking serious.

Your logic is so unbelievably twisted that I'm not even sure where to start. So, because people are shot (many, who of course are shooting their own guns in return) we should not be angry because some angsty fuck walks into a school and offs 30+ unarmed people? Just because outrageous actions occur at time elsewhere in the world does not mean I should not be outraged when something like this happens here.

I think the level of outrage should be no different whether it happens here or Iraq or anywhere.

From Juan Cole:

Quote:
I keep hearing from US politicians and the US mass media that the "situation is improving" in Iraq. The profound sorrow and alarm produced in the American public by the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech should give us a baseline for what the Iraqis are actually living through. They have two Virginia Tech-style attacks every single day. Virginia Tech will be gone from the headlines and the air waves by next week this time in the US, though the families of the victims will grieve for a lifetime. But next Tuesday I will come out here and report to you that 64 Iraqis have been killed in political violence. And those will mainly be the ones killed by bombs and mortars. They are only 13% of the total; most Iraqis killed violently, perhaps 500 a day throughout the country if you count criminal and tribal violence, are just shot down. Shot down, like the college students and professors at Blacksburg. We Americans can so easily, with a shudder, imagine the college student trying to barricade himself behind a door against the armed madman without. But can we put ourselves in the place of Iraqi students?

Do you fail to see the difference of deaths from a war, and deaths from something completely unexpected?

Not to mention the fact it's harder to feel for people that are so far away physically and in such a different situation. You said it yourself, emotions are chemical reactions, so I think the level of outrage should be whatever the fuck it wants to be depending on person.

no, i didn't read your link yet, but i bookmarked it. I'm currently just taking a short break from work, and i don't have time to get too deeply immersed in a new topic.

it wasn't just that it was on US soil. it was that it was only like 150 miles away. it was on a college campus like my own. and it was just some stupid little shit killing dozens of unarmed, innocent people because he felt sad or something.

and coincidentally enough, when columbine happened, i was in junior high in Ft. Collins.

and maybe it is horseshit that i don't react the same way to the events in iraq, but like i said, i've tried to avoid the depressing events that happen every day. what good would it do me to immerse myself in those depressing events when i literally have no ability to affect it either way. like i said, the main reason why i had such a strong reaction was because it hit so close to home and it was everywhere. i couldn't avoid musing on the matter and getting fumed up.

edit: and for the record, i am against our occupation in iraq, and have used my power to vote accordingly, but that's about the extent of it.

I was in high school in Fort Collins during Columbine.  Crazy.

And to your post, fair enough man, I was just typing shit out.  Just bullshitting really.

Oh, right. We're not in war. Guess I'll email my brother and tell him to catch the next flight from Kuwait because he's wasting his time since there isn't really a war going on.

Ok, when you call him, tell him we're engaged in a hostile occupation instead.

I won't be calling him. No phone. Email my friend, email.

But seriously, just because it's not two armies lined up 100 yards from each other with someone yelling "FIRE!" doesn't mean it's not a war.

Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it isn't a war. I'm not supporting it either, but if it's not a war what is it?

One SHOULD be outraged by the despicable action, regardless of where it takes place.

You implied otherwise with:

Quote:
Chill the fuck out and focus your anger on the fact that this type of shooting takes place multiple times DAILY in Iraq. Get your head out of your ass and wake up to shit that happens outside of the US.

Just because it happens elsewhere doesn't mean its not important when it happens here.

Quote:
It is time to tell an inconvenient truth about Iraq: it is an occupation, not a war. In wars, armies fight to dominate land. The US won the war three years ago when Bush said, “Mission Accomplished”. Then the occupation started, and our troops were not trained or equipped for an occupation under predictably hostile circumstances. Finally getting the courage to tell the truth that the US is an occupying force drastically changes the picture in Iraq. You cannot “win” an occupation. “Cut and run” does not apply to an occupation.

Source of that quote? I would disagree.

Why can't you win an occupation? You win when people stop resisting. "In wars armies fight to dominate lands." That sounds like what we're doing. In fact, that sounds like an occupation. But then it says you cannot "win" an occupation. So then I suppose you can never win a war? I fail to see why this doesn't qualify as a war.

You also realize that regardless if it is or isn't technically a war, it doesn't change my initial point.

In my quote, I meant that he should've chilled out and came down to the exact same emotional level he has for whatever's going on in Iraq.

I guess I have a strong dislike for emotional outbursts.  :smirk:
