Yank wants to visit Montreal for 1st time - any suggestions

My fiance and I want to take a vacation, and we have been eyeing Montreal, since it is about as close to a "european" vacation that we can afford.

I am interested in sight seeing / strolling / cafe dining / loungy bars (not club scene) and art museums. He wants to do the same things. We both dont drive so we would need to use a subway system, and I wanted some feedback about what to do for 1st timers. I did some research for hotels, and the prices are pretty affordable, but Id like to know the names of some central locations. If someone was coming to the US and wanted to visit in New York, and got a good price on a hotel in Staten Island - they'd be pretty pissed if they were intending to do the "new york" thing. Any help would be appreciated?

I don't think there are subways in Montreal as far as I know. Just walk around, it's a nice place. Also, expect to get the stink eye for being English. I've been there and that's what it was like. Wicked place nonetheless.

Oh, maybe, I just wasn't aware of it. But walking isn't that far. Also, you might want to check out the church, it has killer wicked architecture.

let me also say, i am very interested in Middle Eastern/Arabic food/lounges/music/hookahs. If someone could reccomend a hotel in this area that is afforable and close to some of these joints, id be much obliged

There are plenty of hotels around, but the affordable ones are ugly. They get the job done. Also, you might want to look into a Kava bar.I know there are some in Quebec city, not sure about montreal though.

There is an extensive transit system, you don't need a car.


I think that you should try and go during the jazz festival. And don't worry about being looked down on - pretty much everyone speaks english and french.

make sure you and your beau have a clean criminal record by canadian standards, a
misdemeanor here can be a criminal offense in canadia, if there is an issue a
visit to the canadian consul near you could help to clear things up and allow you
passage into canada

and make no jokes about kidnapping their queen, they dont find it amusing

we are both squeaky clean. we are also not going to get drunk/high in public - a few of my internet contacts immediatly asked if i was going to smoke hash/grass etc in public - i am not, since i dont do illegal things here, in public.

If anyone knows of any middle eastern bars/returants, let me know. I am also into Ethopian food,as well as weird/cool streets with lots of people watching / photo ops. And, is there a time in the year that is not good? or better? we werre planing to go in October, but we are not married to that.

They'll probably treat you like shit if they hear you speak English, may get spit on if they find out your an American. Rudest place I've ever been too.
