That'd be weird if it died of natural causes the day before you planned on euthanizing it.

Maybe next paycheck get a puppy?
I mean, where else would you put all the  you had for your current dog?

I dunno girl. I've met Bambi, and yeah, she's old, but she's SO sweet, and so loveable! I don't know if her condition has declined since I met her, but she seemed to get around fairly well when I was there, and she definitely enjoyed hanging out and getting attention and stuff.

As someone else said though, she will still love you after she's gone. if you feel like her quality of life is such that she deserves to be at peace, then yes, put her down. It probably sounds silly, but try to put yourself in her position. Would you want to be alive anymore? Would the time you spend with your masters be enough to want to go on, despite the physical ailments??

I honestly don't know...all I know is that she seems to be in serious discomfort lately.  Like, she'll be trying to follow me around the house but she can't really do it that well.  She'll stumble and her back legs are all quivery.  And sometimes, she'll just fall down.  :frown:

It just hurts to see her like that.  If we bring her in from outside (she doesn't want to walk on the leash, she just stands there and then after a few seconds she'll start digging into herself and itching and chewing on her body like mad again, even outside) she has a hard time making it up the steps, she'll just stumble.

Overall, I think the stumbling and quivering factor has increased since the last time you've seen her.  It's just getting hard to be around her, Liz, because I can feel and see her declining.  She definately loves us and loves to be around us, I just don't know.

See, that's what I mean...I'm so disassociated from reality at the moment I don't know what's what, or what is the right move to make in regards to her health.

Also, she just never seems to be at peace now...she is always licking and itching herself and now I am worried that this constant bodily agitation she has MIGHT be a symptom of pain, and I'm just not realizing it.  :frown:

I think she would let you know if she was in serious pain, like yelping or crying.  You obviously know her better than I do though.  It would kill me too, if my dog seemed to be that uncomfortable :frown:  I wish that the vets could figure out why she's so itchy and at least help out with that.  If she's 14 years old, or even close to it, that's a VERY long life for a lab/lab-mix.  It's likely that she'll just continue to worsen until you don't have much of a choice as to what to do.  Whether you want to wait until that point is totally up to you.  If it were me, I would say that if she still seems happy, and you can see life in her eyes, let her keep on trucking.  When she doesn't seem like herself anymore, doesn't try to follow you around the house, or her situation declines, I would put her down.  If you want me to come over some day this week and hang out with you guys and tell you from an outside point of view how she looks compared to last time I was there, I will.

I had to put my dog of 14 years down

I took him to my girlfriends place of employment (the vet) few years ago. I held him when they put him down, sucked ass. I didn't cry, but my girlfriend was released from work because she was so upset.

I figured that's the least I could do for my old buddy.

Okay, today I am in a completely different place then I was yesterday. She looks fine to me today. Yesterday, it seemed like she was honestly at death's door. But today she is wagging her tail, walking around and being really friendly. She's even been hopping up and down a bit whenever I get her leash out for potty.

Yesterday...I don't know what was going on. I saw things completely differently.

So I still don't know what's up, and what perception is the accurate one. That's why I'm going to have Liz come over and give me another set of eyeballs.
