Would you put this old dog down?
    #6734348 -

*14 yrs of age (we think)

*Nearly completely blind and deaf

*Has a tumor on her leg that inhibits her from walking around.  She always acts stiff and doesn't have a lot of strength to move.  She can barely make it up the two small steps outside of our mini-patio anymore.

*CONSTANTLY licking and itching her body.  Been to numerous vets over the past year with various meds and they don't know why she can't leave herself alone.  She seems to be in discomfort 90% of the time.

*The other 10% of the time she is shitting and/or pissing on the floor, with little warning.

I am having a hard time making this decision because she obviously loves us.

Help?   I want to do what's best for her...in the wild she would have already been picked off.  I can't help wondering if keeping her alive when she's evidently uncomfortable is wrong.

I'm just confused because I can tell she REALLY LOVES US!  :frown:

If you don't put it down today it might just go on its own tomorrow... Do it a favor and take it in.

Well, yeah, I do, because I love my dog. I want to do the right thing and I needed someone to point it out because I'm too close to the situation to view it without bias.

So FUCK, point it out for me PLEASE, because this is going to hit hard.

Its gonna be very tough to do, but in my opinion, you may want to have her put down. God knows no one wants to hear it or even worse have it done. But when the dogs in discomfort alot of the time, and is loosing its senses simply due to age. There really is nothing you can do but say your farwells give your dog a big hug and let em go with some dignity.

Btw I sincerely apologize if any of this does sound a little harsh.

Not harsh at all...thank you for saying all that.  You put out a good point, letting her "die with dignity."  That pretty much put it into perspective for me.

Thanks..  this will be hard...I've NEVER had to do this before.  :frown:

Constantly suffering, crippled by a growing tumor, blind and deaf, older than time itself..

If you'd poll the Shroomery, you'd find that almost all of them hope their own personal death will be merciful in some way. And the dying process often can be quite shocking.

You know my history with euthanasia. I'd say a merciful death is the best thing you can give it. Have a vet come over and let it be put to rest in the heart of its own territory, surrounded by loved ones.

In the wild it would've died a horrible death already, without all the care and nutrient-dense food. The wonderful care you give it, the way you describe its situation, only serves to prolong the suffering.

With all your love, care and yummy food and fresh water you did your best to give it a good life. It lies in your power to give it a good death too, free of struggle and fear.

Meditate on it, together with your dog in the livingroom. Whichever you decide then (the humane injection or letting nature take its course), will be the right thing to do.

My personal belief is that all of us will reincarnate infinitely, and that we will relive everything that is possible, over and over, once every trillion years or so. In this kind of universe, every loss and every gain is temporary, but shall return forever. I cannot say better, but in my view your dog will pass on to another place, and then another, and another.

Nobody wants to die but everybody wants a merciful death. This is one of the tougher dilemmas out there, meditate on it in presence of your dog.

Whatever you choose - that which happens is God's will, always.

I had a dog that followed me every were. It was the hardest thing to put him down, I stayed with him the entire time. I could tell he loved me, I got him when I was a small child. I think if you truely love the dog, and the dog is in that much pain, you are only doing what's best. Would you want to live like that? She'll still love you after she's gone. Take care Moth, and best of luck and love.

My parents went out of town so they left the 14 year old golden retreiver with my 89 year old grandma. My dad called me the other day and said that, according to my grandma, the dog has been laying in the same spot for three days and couldn't get up. I left work and went to my grandma's to find the dog laying in a pool of piss. I helped him up (no easy task with an 80 pound animal), took him outside and washed him off. Then I took him in my car to my parents' house. My sister and I watched after him until my parents got back from vacation yesterday. He has a very difficult time walking and I know we will have to put him down soon. It will be very difficult because he's been my good buddy since I was in 7th grade.

MOTH, it sounds like it's time to say your goodbyes.

If it were my dog, i would do him myself. He hates the vet. I'd take him out to the country were i found him, spend the day with him, and do it there

That could be an allergic reaction to the food you give it, or fleas even.

Seriously though, dogs that are clean and healthy that itch nearly all the time are often having an allergic reaction to the dog food.

Not that it matters now that dog is nearly dead.

Are you going to put it out of its misery?

Allow the dog a dignified and peaceful death. There comes a point where keeping a pet alive starts to become a matter of selfish desire for not loosing the animal, than doing what is best for it.

Its a hard choice to make, but as W_S said above - had it not been for you taking care of it, it would of died by natural causes by now.

Ive had 2 dogs put down, its real sad but once they become unable to walk, it becomes a real hassle to deal with constant cleaning up. yeah it sounds shallow to kill something for shitting all over but id do the same with a person if i could. I spent 6 months having to carry my grandma to and from the toilet and whiping her ass with baby whipes. Fuck that, never again. Take solace in the fact that if they cant stand it usually means it hurts too much. Feed em a nice steak or whatever their favorite food is, call a vet and have him put down at your house. Makes it more peaceful to not have to be carted to some scary vets office to die. Good luck with that. I swear losing a pet is worse than losing a person

We've tried several types of hypoallergenic food, steroids and no fleas. She acts like something is in there and she's trying to get at it.

And yes, I'm fucking putting my dog out of its misery. This week sometime, when I can fucking afford it because I have about 50 cents to my name as of now. Probably on thurs. when I can get my paycheck.
