College Question
    #6726539 -

So I got into NYU and the UW Seattle. Anybody really opinionated on either city? Both are good schools, and I would honestly enjoy either city. I have some family in Seattle, the tuition is cheaper, and it will be a bit cheaper to fly back home. But New York is well...its fucking New York.

I've always been under the impression that NYU is on the tier above UW, and NYC is a tight city, but I've never been to Seattle.

But fuck UW, that's where I wanted to go so bad, but I fucked up my app and they wouldn't let me in. Bastards. (Yes, I know in the end it was my fault)

why go to NYU when you live in california?
unless youre rich, you wouldnt be able to come home during the shorter breaks. fuck that. california is HUGE there's no reason to go out of state.
i go to school 6.5 hours (driving) away from home, and i wish i were closer. seriously.

Well the thing is it wouldn't be THAT expensive for me to do. I actually am pretty low income, so they gave me a pretty sweet financial aid deal. The school is 46,763 a year with all expenses except travel included. After scholarships, grants, tacking in 2 trips home a year, a 30,000 mutual fund (thanks for investing in SF real estate, grandma) and the roughly 10,000 in tuition my parents hope they'll be bale to pay, I'll basically end up after 4 years owing 40,000 in low interest loans (all or most of which are deferrable without interest until I graduate).

I want to move back to SF eventually, but I wanna travel a bit and see what the world has to offer. New York seems a little more exotic and exciting than Seattle.

I don't know, personally I don't mind not going home over breaks at all, at least shorter ones.

ok i bet i will persuade u to go to UW. first of all its UW, they are the HUSKIES BABY! and we have a great extra curricualer activites, like basketball and football to watch during the seasons.

its closer to your home

i guaren-fucking-tee that washington has better scenery, culture, nature as far as the feling goes, and probably nicer people. some parts of new york are just fucking extra grimy, adn you dont want to end up in the worng neighborhood. not too many places like that in washington

we have the cascade mountains, and snowbaording is hella tight

mount rainier is a nice little place to check out

seattle has this place called the seattle center thats fucking tight

and last but not least, during the fall...its SHROOMMMMMMM SEASON!!!!
haven't you ever heard that washington is the MUSHROOM CAPITAL of the united states!!!? if you have any exp. picking wild active psychadelic mushrooms then UW is where you want to go b/c during the fall, seattle, HELL, WASHINGTON strait oozes psilocybes, and if you've never picked befor, WA is a great place to start and start learning! you can virtually find cyanescens and other active mushies on every other block, and fuckin seattle is just tight. we have a tight mmusic scene too.

go to UW man, youll be glad you did. only downside is that during the fall it rains like a motherfucker, but thats where the :mushroomgrow: makes it all worth it!
good luck with your decision

Counterpoints:

NYC has arguably the best music scene in the world, especially considering the huge variety they have.

I'm guessing it's not too hard to find drugs

I'm also guessing that NYC has far more culture... Little Italy, China Town, Puerto Rican booty as far as the eye can see.

NYC has tons of places that are "fucking tight"

And in the latest ranking of most dangerous cities in American, NYC was the fourth safest city with a population over 500,000, I don't think crime will be a serious problem to a college student since most of the time they're probably going to be on campus anyway.

Holy fucking shit that's...just overwhelming.  :ooo:

If you can knock it down with aid, well....

That's an absurd price for a uni education, tho.  You better fucking value your profs and the ambiance there to deal with that shit.

So, is your pops some sort of highly-paid CEO/lawyer or something?

Yea thats crazy expensive. I pay $5,000 a year in tuition and about $7,000 a year in rent. I dont think it is worth paying that much for an undergraduate education.

Go to UW.

Seattle isn't as covered in people as NY is, and is WAAAAAY more chill and friendly. The music scene is fabulous (you just have to keep your eyes and ears open on Capitol Hill to find it) and all manner of outdoor activities are super close. Want to go hiking? Drive 30 minutes east and you're in amazing hiking AND camping territory during the spring/summer months. Sailing/swimming? Either hop a bus to West Seattle, or just dive into Lake Washington. Biking your thing? Bike paths are everywhere and the whole city is very used to having good bike traffic on the main roads.

Then you've got all the awesome neighbourhoods around. The U-District, obviously for you, is a big one with tons of college folks who for the most part are pretty liberal and great people. Capitol Hill is also rampant with liberal folks who are great fun as well. And if you want to live in what is basically a city of hippies, Fremont is the neighbourhood for you. On top of the music scene, there are always great theater (I must plug an old alliance and say try and attend any performance you can from Cornish, a nearby college), opera, dance, festivals going on. Hempfest, anyone?

Which brings me to the next bit: drug culture in Seattle is fantastic. Even the more elusive drugs such as ketamine, the 2C-x family, and some tryptamines can be found pretty easily in very high potency. Plus as others mentioned, shrooms grow everywhere and the pot is amazing. And if coke is your thing, you will have no problem getting good stuff any time. Other regulars such as ecstacy, LSD, and scripts are also easily attainable, and everything is pretty decently priced.

As for your school, I didn't attend it, but as I was a Cornish student I ran into UW kids a lot and had to head over to their campus for performances or workshops, and I really enjoy the campus and the whole U-District. For the most part it seems like a really great school for undergrad stuff and the location just makes it all the more fantastic.

I could go on, but basically, of all the cities I've visited and lived in, Seattle has always been my favourite and if I ever settle down for good and it happens to be in a city, Seattle will be that city.

Also: Hello Shroomery, first post. :smirk:

Seattle is starting to seem like the more attractive location, but I think NYU is a better school. They're giving me a 10,000 scholarship and a little less than 4,000 in grants. And the school I got into is really cool, its an individualized study program. Its the one Anne Hathaway and the Olsens go (went?).

Honestly New York City is by far my favorite city in the world, and Ive traveled extensively throughout the world. There is just no city like it, if you have any doubts just watch any Woody Allen movie like Manhattan or Annie Hall to convince you NY is a way better place. Seattle is alright I guess, it has a warf....so either way youd be alright. But NY is a cut above everywhere else
