New Scientist Magazine says...
    #6722039 -

Calorie restriction is the most tried and true way to extend lifespan and improve health.

Do you think it is good to slow your metabolism then, so that you eat less? What do you think is the best way, fasting?

Keep in mind, that only applies if you are getting more calories than you need, like most of us. You need X calories in healthy doses throughout the day. "3 squares and a hard day's work," blah, blah.

I think it's a radical spin on the metabolic process, but I don't think it can be exploited that way. I've seen some people who eat like birds in some documentary and they may live long, but they're frail-ass people. I wouldn't want to be so frail.

Counting calories helped me lose some weight, so I'd imagine it has the potential to prolong life.

A fast metabolism doesn't mean you eat more, just means you process food more quickly. There is a reason people with fast metabolisms are all skinny.

listen to what youre posting:
[not eating makes you live longer]

that's nonsense. Though i guess we need this kind of extreme backlash to hit into the glutton that is America.

we all know the best way to live forever is to stay active. it's just as much psycological as physiological. you need to eat to stay active. Im training as a cyclist right now, riding for hours following a program i wrote out 5-6 days of the week, every week. I eat about 7thousand calories a day and my body fat is so low that i have veins popping out in my quadriceps. Eating is GOOD. I dont think that the proposed harm of burning so much energy in a lifetime would counteract the cardiovascular and respiratory benefits attained.

i guess the statement of 'eating less makes you live longer' can be true if it refers to eating less at each meal, but having more meals per day. THAT will 100% FOR SURE raise anyone's metabolism. and you want that, so that you can live an active fulfilling life. Starving yourself in an effort to eat less, however, will severly SLOW your body's metabolism rate. Having a slow metabolism means that when you finally DO eat, that food will go straight to fat storage because your body is tryinig to prepare itself for your fasts. This means that less will go towards muscle regrowth, etc. How could that make you live longer?

Actually it is true. You still eat, just not very much.

It's called 'caloric restriction' - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorie_restriction

A few years ago I read an article saying they were developing drugs that trick your body into thinking you are eating less, without actually eating less.

--------------------
Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Right, I didn't say "not eating", I said "calorie restriction"

I didn't even say "starving yourself". My guess is that you created a straw man and knocked it down because you find this information threatening to yourself, eating 7,000 cal a day.

Don't twist my words again; I'm not saying you're fat or you're going to die early. Instead of acting on the impulse to defend your habits go read about the many controlled studies (meaning there is a control group) regarding this topic.

From the link Mushman provided:

Quote:
We recommend changing your diet gradually, focussing at first on changing the quality of your diet: many people find that improving their diets by replacing low-nutrition, high-Calorie foods (such as sugar, grains, and high-saturated-fat) with high-nutrition, low-Calorie foods (notably fruits and vegetables) will lead to some weight loss even without any attempt to reduce Calories.

This recommendation is in accordance with mainstream medical advice for improving your health and extending your lifespan.

IMO, counting calories is a drag. I've never been on a calorie-restricted diet, and was able to lose weight easily after both of my pregnancies through substituting high-bulk, low-calorie foods for low-bulk, high-calorie foods.

In terms of health, a calorically-restricted diet would have to consist entirely of VERY nutritious foods in order to be safe and beneficial. I've read the mice studies & found them very intriguing. Whether the same applies to humans remains to be seen. We can be sure, though, that the current junk food gluttony practiced in "civilized" society is killing us early AND stealing the energy and life from the years we have.

Thanks for the excerpt.

I already eat pretty healthy. I don't want to lose weight, I would actually like to gain some. But recently I have been eating less and I have felt much healthier overall...able to run longer, sinuses clearer, more energy, etc. So that's why I was wondering if slowing my metabolism was a possible solution...maybe this is all I need though, and I can just eat this much and stay the same weight.
