Just a few noob questions ^^
    #6710791 -

Well ive read up alot lately and i have a few questions is all.

1. Can you stick random water into a syringe, wrap the syringe in foil and PC it? This syringe will be used for making a spore syringe. And when i PC the syringe, i wrap it completely in foil with or without the needle cover?

2. If i made a LC jar, same question pretty much, could i pour some water in add a tablespoon of honey and PC that? Or would i have to boil the water first etc.

3. I poured some boiling water into a dry/washed pyrex container and covered it in tinfoil. You think thats sterile?

4. So...what kind of contamination is this? http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6709934/an/0/page/0

Thanks for reading. And..maybe thinking of answering

1. Yes, but obviously better quality water is desired like, distilled or spring.
2. Add water and liquid medium of choice (honey, karo, malt dextrose, turbinado, etc.) then pc
3. Completely sterile? I'm gonna say no but I may be wrong. We pc @15psi (250 deg.) to steriliize but water boils @ 212deg. So I'd say clean yeah, sterile no.
4. No clue.

There are teks for most of those that will detail the methodology of sterile procedures as well as making liquid cultures. Read posts by RR and blutjager and agar on sterilization and why it's important as well as how it works.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but from the way you've phrased your questions, it seems like you want to see if the easiest possible way will work for producing mushrooms. You should be doing it the opposite way -- learning as much as you can about mycology and mushroom cultivation, why things are done the way they're done, what works and what doesn't... and then deciding for yourself which course you want to take. More knowledge and more effort now means time and heartache saved later down the track.

Thanks for the answers ,
but ozzy ive read up on alot of things and searched and read and these were just a few questions i came to ask on my own, i alrady have 3 syringe that should be sterile since i did the whole boil water and suck in out blah blah tons of times and such. Its just a few things to have a better understanding of how it works maybe? Dunno I have a pressure cooker and i read otto's tek on LC and since it wasnt with pressure cooker use why dont i just ask somebody who does know and try it? Obviously i could try the other way but its a method made because people do not have pressure cookers and boil it instead. Well its all good. I think I should do better the next try (contammed my first try) :|

Fair enough. Sorry for jumping on you, my generic advice to anybody is just to keep reading and reading until you understand why things are done -- i.e at what point certain germs and bacteria die, how fast alcohol/water ratios evaporate, how effective alcohol is and how it functions as a sterilizing agent, etc.

Obviously though, as much as we read, to begin with most of us can't be bothered building massive glove boxes and inoculating 20 feet underground in a nuclear bunker chemistry lab. So the question is, what methods give the best chance of successful cultivation with the minimum of expertise required? I'd say that boiling your LC and sterilizing a [still air] room would be enough, so long as you pay heed to the basic sterilization procedures -- wash your hands to the elbow, wear gloves, wash the gloves, spray the air and wipe the surfaces with lysol, keep the room sealed for half an hour before hand, keep exposure to a minimum. That is, in my opinion, more important for the beginner than heating water at 250 degrees than 212.

And boil the water first. That'll get rid of the random stuff that you don't want, then you can scoop the relatively clean/pure water from the top and sterilize properly from there.

oh hell no, im not an expert. ive just been reading a hell of a lot for a while, and posting lets me confirm what i know and imprint it into my memory. plus if, for whatever reason, ive gotten anything wrong, somebody else will quickly correct me.

haha well another thought of mine is why you would wrap a syringe in aluminum foil when sterilizing? I get the putting it into a jar with the needle side up (? up? would that make the steam escape?) and then PC it. But why aluminum foil?

1) Random water? If you use any respectable source of water it would be fine but just don't draw water from your toilet bowl before flushing k?
2)You can go straight to PC
3) That is probably not sterile because not all organisms are killed by boiling water and the water has not boiled enough (probably dropped about 20 degrees just by you transferring it from your boiling container to your LC container and the heating of the container). PC it or at least use the microwave tek
4) That is green mold. I had something similar. Inject. Green dots. Mucho crying.

Thanks tobo. Anyways Ive read about how you want the needle tips to be facing up so then the water doesnt squirt out. But wouldnt that make the steam escape from the syringe causing you to lose water in the run also?
So from what i know i just add the water into the syringe, put the needle cap on, wrap it in tin foil, face em in a jar with the needle up and PC at 15psi for 20 mins.

Here is what happens, in a pressure cooker your water heats up, turns to steam, steam can't escape, builds pressure and temperature. Because pressure is greater outside the syringe at first, steam will come in, later when pressure equalizes it should reach equilibrium. By covering it in tin foil you're preventing extra unneeded circulation and recondensation.

What all that means is cover it in tin foil and you're fine.

Alright, some people told me the water would explode if i used a filled syringe, and some said it would be fine so i was like ahh what the hell. Haha thanks for clarifying that i think i understand the concept now with the syringes, As for the jar, If i added some distilled water (untouched) and the honey, capped it and cover in tinfoil. It would act the same? Honey/water sterilized and jar sterilized?
