mushrooms growing off perlite
    #6708668 -

mycelium has spread through the drainage holes in the bottom of my casing and has colonized all the perlite at the bottom of the terrarium and now mushrooms are growing of it. does this happen often? and how should i go about dunking the casing tray since its stuck to the perlite?

....... sounds unlikely.

perlite has no nutritional value, that I am aware of....

you should post a pic.

it has just probably spread through the holes because of the moisture n perlite, not nutrients. i've seen myc extending through moisture even though there's no obvious nutrients. anyway you shouldn't have used something like that with holes in the bottom where myc can get through i think.

You should never drill holes in the bottom of a substrate tray. That encourages pinning below the substrate, and as you have seen, the mycelium reaches into the damp perlite, possibly waterlogging your substrate, which greatly reduces performance.

In addition, 'drainage' holes drain the CO2, and you want the CO2 high in the substrate and low on top of the casing layer because that stimulates pinning where you want it to happen.

For now, I'd suggest elevating the tray above the perlite for a simple fix. Next time, don't drill holes in your tray.

the first time i ever grew mushrooms i used a tub with lava rocks and bubble wands and the tub with my malabar had myc all over the lava rocks, i had lots of mushrooms growing off the rocks, my buddy did the same thing and his fc was completely colonized, we both used malabar, multispore and he had crazy amounts of fruit bodies still growing after half the cakes were removed, he got snitched on and raided before he emptied the fc of cakes to see if they would still grow
