I want to get to know decent hip-hop.

For years I've been saying, "I hate rap".

When, this isn't entirely true. Often I will enjoy the beat and the tune... But it's the lyrics that annoy me.

What I mean to say is:

Can someone suggest some hip-hop that is more meaningful than just "Skeet, Skeet, Skeet" and "Were da bitches and booze?"?

I've asked people before, but to me, Tupac is not deep and meaningful.

dr. dre's got good beats and lyrics. i don't listen to alot either but thats my favorite :shrug:

There are a few groups that I already know i like, but arent 100% hip-hop material.

Such as:

Beastie Boys
Gorillaz
Mindless Self Indulgence

Definitely man. I feel the same way as you, and I am always impressed by Outkast's lyrics, rhythm, and syncopation. I also like how their style of music is broad due to their non-hiphop influences.

Good stuff.

I'm sure you've heard Ms. Jackson? Andre 3000's verse in that song is one of my favorites. Poetic and emotional.

There are a decent amount of artists there, but their styles cover a broad array of the underground and some mainstream stuff. I'm willing to bet there's at least one or two things in there you will like, and if you continue to listen to rap/hip-hop the others you will grow to like.

He's funny sometimes, but seriously, there's better stuff out there.

Definitely not someone I would recommend to one who is new to rap/hip-hop and doesn't really like it, especially because of general lyrical content.

Ever hear of Cage?

Him and Eminem had a "beef" over who pioneered their style of rap, so if you like Eminem I would think you would find Cage to be listenable.

Kottonmouth Kings are my current favorite, they range from hip hop to reggae to punk.

Tech N9ne is a little more hardcore but has awesome flows (listen to the song T9X its great).
