A Chandler man has been arrested after his condominium caught fire while he was cooking methamphetamine in a toaster oven, authorities said.

Jonathan Zaletel, 19, was arrested on suspicion of drug manufacturing, drug possession and criminal damage.

Zaletel was cooking meth at about 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of North Alma School Road near Ray Road when his condominium bedroom closet caught fire, authorities said.

He unsuccessfully attempted to stop the fire with water and window cleaner. He then went to Wal-Mart to buy a fire extinguisher.

The condo's sprinkler system put out the fire while he was gone. Chandler firefighters were at the scene when Zaletel returned.

Meth manufacturers don't use toaster ovens often, said Sgt. Rich Burden, a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office agent with the County's High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force.

"But what they are probably doing is drying it and that's really explosive because it has ether in it, brake cleaner, stuff like that," Burden said. "They dry it out so it's not so chunky and muddy-like, so they can snort it."

he coulda probably also knocked on a few neighbors doors (2 or 3) and found himself an extinguisher in half the time. hell, i keep a fire extinguisher in the trunk of my car!
