CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

A yearlong investigation has resulted in the arrests of 40 people believed to be involved with a family heroin and cocaine distribution ring centered out of Chandler, according to Chandler police.

Detective Seth Tyler announced on Friday the conclusion of the multi-agency effort that began in early 2011 and concluded with multiple arrests on drug and gang-related charges.

Tyler said more than 32 pounds of heroin and 5 pounds of cocaine worth more than $1.75 million destined for the state prison system and community users were confiscated during the investigation.

A Chandler police spokesman said the heroin was routed to Arizona from Mexico. He said there are more than 200 separate charges against the arrested, which he called some "really bad dudes."

The Chandler Police Narcotics Unit in 2011 began investigating a Chandler family suspected of involvement in the drug trade, and the department's Gang Unit and the Arizona Department of Public Safety soon became involved, according to Tyler.

The investigation further revealed the family was part of a criminal organization involved in buying, selling and distributing illicit drugs into the state prison system, according to Tyler. Investigators said that the group consisted of street and prison gang members and criminals from the drug trade.

The scope of the investigation grew to such enormity that it required a collaborative effort that included the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Arizona Department of Corrections and the Arizona attorney general's office.

Warrants were served on the remaining suspects on Thursday throughout the metropolitan Phoenix area, according to Tyler.

"The distribution of heroin and other drugs is one of the lowest forms of crime there is," said Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne. "This illicit trade breeds violence, tears apart families and neighborhoods and rips at the fabric of society by destroying lives. We must vigorously pursue drug traffickers at every level, prosecute them and put them behind bars."
