Brazilian police break up international cocaine ring

SAO PAULO, Brazil: Brazilian police have broken up an international drug trafficking ring that for years has been smuggling cocaine from Brazil to the United States, Europe and Africa, authorities said Tuesday.

Armed with more than 80 search and arrest warrants, 350 federal police agents fanned out across six Brazilian states on Tuesday and arrested 19 people believed to belong to a network led by Lebanese citizens living in Brazil, said a federal police spokesman who declined to give his name, citing department policy.

Authorities described the operation as significant, but did not say how much cocaine they believed the ring smuggled abroad, using shipping containers and drug couriers known as "mules." Cocaine is not produced in Brazil in large quantities but the country is a major route for cocaine made elsewhere in South America.

The police operation dubbed "The Lebanese-Brazil Connection," was launched in the states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Para, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Espirito Santo.

Investigations into the ring began two years ago "after German police sent us information pointing to the existence of a drug trafficking network operated by Lebanese living in Brazil," the spokesman said.

He did not know if the Lebanese alleged ringleaders were among those arrested on Tuesday.

The gang, he said, purchased cocaine in Peru and Bolivia and shipped it to the United States, Portugal, Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Africa.

Prior to Tuesday's arrests, federal police had arrested 54 people connected to the gang and seized 3.4 metric tons (3.75 tons) of cocaine, the spokesman said.

Police in Spain, Portugal and Belgium were also involved in the investigation, he said.
