New Belgium
    #6647028 -

Has anybody had any beers by these guys? One that really piques my interest is 1554. Of course I'm not legally able to buy the stuff for a few more weeks, but as soon as I am this is one I'm going to try to get my hands on right away.

New Belgium is probably my favorite US brewery. They make some damn fine beers. The best IMHO are Fat Tire, Sunshine, and 1554. Fat Tire is a really good amber, Sunshine is like blue moon, but better, and finally 1554. 1554 is about as black as a Coke when you pour it in a glass and can actually see it. I guess it is just classified as a Black Ale. If you have ever had Abita Turbodog, and liked it, you will most definitely like 1554. It is really heavy, but if you like dark beers you will not be dissapointed. Plus, all their beers are brewed using wind and solar power, so they are eco-friendly which is always a plus.

Excellent. How I heard about them actually was through an article that said they were going to start piping the co2 produced from brewing over to an algae bioreactor that will produce biodiesel. It might be a challenge finding their beer because according to their website they only distribute it in the west.

I've been itchin' for a road trip for a while now. I might just have to figure out a way to do that this summer.

Yeah it's pretty hard for me to find it too. Depending on where I am, it's around a 4 hour drive or a 30 minute drive. It's not just distributed in the West though. I believe the furthest east it is distributed is Arkansas, and I know they have it in Texas too. If you emailed them I'm sure they'd be able to tell you the closest place to find it.

How do you figure that?

Taken from the New Belgium website:

Quote:
The oldest reference to these black beers that our dynamic duo uncovered was in the year 1554.

Taken from The Beer Store website:

Quote:
Kronenbourg 1664
This strong, traditional beer was named after the year the Hatt family, the brewery's founders, first started commercial brewing.

I see no attempt to "rip off" the brand name.

new belgium are one of the most successful modern brewers to date. most of their brews are pretty damn good if you ask me, they are one of my favorites.
