Anyone bored and want to do some statistics?

Anyone responding to these problems can you somewhat show me how you did it and not just an answer.

A bag contains 5 red, 4 green, 3 blue marbles. Suppose you pick two at random, without replacement. Find the probability of the following events:

1. The two marbles chosen are both red.



2. The first marble chosen is red.



3. At least one of the two marbles is blue.



4. It takes 2 picks to get a red marble.



5. It takes at least two picks to get a red marble.



And one more

If 5 cards are drawn from a 52 card deck, the probability that all 5 are diffrent is 0.493. What is the probability that at least two of the cards are matching? (matching in that they are like a pair of fours or two 9s. or two kings )

1.(5/12) * (4/11)=.1515 = .15
There's a five out of twelve chance of drawing a red one for the first time. If that occurs, there is a 4 out of 11 chance of drawing a red again. Then just multiply the two together (i think, check your book then give me a dollar or something if i'm right).

2. 5/12=.416666=.42

I forget the formulas for the rest..

The only real way to find out is to do the experiment yourself.

Find them marbles.

okay, I'm a little rusty on this but,

3. the probability that the first is blue and the second isn't
3/12*9/11
plus the prob that the first isn't blue and the second is
9/12*3/11
plus the prob that the first and the second are blue
3/12*2/11
since those are that three ways you can have at least one blue, you just add the probabilities of each way occuring

anyhow, I've gotta get to class, the others shouldn't be hard to figure out. For the last one, just figure the probabilty that all five cards aren't different.

you outa try to do the homeworks yourself.

Some hint on the last one,

use nCr, that is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combination

Now, the probability (warning beginning hand waving now)

is N/S, the number of occurrences over the entire sample space.

So the sample space consist of 52C5, that is 52 choose 5.

Now think about how you many ways of drawing 5 cards such that there will be a pair plus three different singles.

Combinatorics is not my fav. subject...

Get you started, there are 13C1*4C2 ways of picking the pairs...By the law of multiplication...

OH CRAP! SOrry...

What you want is,

Let A be the event of no pairs,
Let B be the event of one or more more pairs.

P(B) = 1.0 - P(A)
