Has anyone taken Statistics?
    #6752101 - 04/05/07 08:17 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

I have to take it next semester and everyone has been warning me how hard it is.

Is it really that hard or is everyone just stupid?

My sister and my roommate took it...
they didn't say it was necessarily that hard, but boring yes

I can handle boring. Almost everything I'm forced to take is boring but I make it though it.

I'm just kind of worried about it being difficult. I've already taken math courses up to Trig so I don't know if that's any help.

true that
I just got a chemistry test back today and I got a 100%, and the average score was 57%!! Yet, I smoke pot daily, do other drugs, and only studied for like an hour or two...

i'm taking stats this quarter... pretty easy material, but the work is a bitch... building all the tables, then the grapshs. So basically, it's just boring stuff...

it's still the first week for me... but today was like 4th grade all over again... We learned what the median, mode, and mean are. for 63 minutes.

the instructor is pretty good though, he's old, but he explains everything you need to know, and it does allow for a reasonable learning pace. ... Ive taken up to calc 2 and it seems much easier than trig.

seems like the class has a lot of repitition. Very cool stuff though, from what i've seen so far. I've been looking forward to taking stats over calculus.

tedious for sure. if you dont bitch and complain to your friends then you'll do fine... but if you start talking about how hard it is, you'll loose motivation.

You need to buy a cable that will connect your calc to your usb port. they're pretty cheap and you can find them on ebay.

You'll need to download and install TI-Connect. I use the program "Study Cards" to store what ever information I need. It lets me flip through the info on my calc as if I actually had study cards. You can also write/download programs, etc... It's a pretty nifty tool.

I thought that at first, but it could still work out if the rest of the people were geniuses, or even just more than above average. It would make the average intelligence of a person... average out, for lack of a better way to put it.

Because, if HALF of the population is BELOW average, then the other half must be ABOVE average in order to even out. That leaves nobody (or very few) at average.

Maybe I'm just thinking about this from a biological standpoint since all my math has been biologically related, but that's pretty fucking basic statistics if you ask me.

No, you could have more than half be below average intelligence. Then some at average. The people of above average intelligence would have to have an intelligence level greater than the absolute value (If 0 is average intelligence) of those who are below. How much greater it would have to be would depend on the amount of people in each level and what, specifically, that absolute value is.

That is often the case.  If you want the most common intelligence you want the mode not the average.  In one of my classes, the teacher has made a point to remark that on every test, not one person got the average score.

And you have to consider that the amount of people with mental retardation of some kind or another FAR outweighs the genius's of the world.

But yes Diecommie that's a good point, I suppose the mode would be a far better representation of average than the literal mean of the IQ of a population.

If you are talking about a first course in stats then it's pretty easy. It's all formulas.

There is usually another undergrad (sometimes master level also) course called mathematical stats. This require a course in probability.

It's basically the nitty grity of the formulas, theories, learned in the first stat class. Covers the three main area of stats, "regular stats", regression, and non-parametric stats.

i'm mathematically challenged.
seriuosly, dyslexia sucks when your trying to compute long formulas.
i'm taking probablity and statistics now, i think i might have to re-take it. It sucks cause the major im going into doesn't really apply to math, statistics in general yeah, but not to the extent in which i need to pass this class....

Heh, the first part of stats is always easy, most math classes take the first month or so to rehash the basics that are essential throughout the rest of the class.  Once you start hitting stuff like p and f values, t tests, f test for simple variances... it gets to be a bit more difficult .  However, like with most math, as long as you stay on top of the work and practice problems you'll be ok.

I also agree with whats said about the professor, make an assessment as early as possible about your prof.  If you don't think he'll be able to teach you in a way you can learn effectively with, find another professor.  Ratemyprofessor.com is a pretty reliable site to check before hand if you didn't know.  Find out when the tutor for the class meets (if there is one), this way if you have trouble you can stay on top of it instead of letting it slip away.  Everything on this course builds on itself, so if you don't understand, something as crucial as a p-value for example, you'll struggle the entire course.

Good luck, i managed to pass my stat class with a B and im horrible at math.  I just found a good teacher, buckled down for a few weeks *summer class*, and managed to squeak by in the end.

i've taken two stats.. stat 101 and psyc 260 which is psychological statistics (and due to poor planning on my part, i'll have to take a third statistic - econ stats). IME, it's not hard per se, but it is tedious and excruciatingly boring. just don't let yourself get completely behind and try to learn everything the night before a test. that's a recipe for disaster, the ingredients for which always seem to fall into my lap.
