The Arcade Fire is one of the best live bands today.
    #6580872 -

Last night I worked the door at Judson Memorial Church, where the Arcade Fire was wrapping up their 5-night stand here in NYC.  I hadn't worked any of the previous 4 shows, nor had I seen them, so I was really psyched for the opportunity to catch as much of the show as possible.  My boss was awesome about it - as soon as they started playing the first song (acoustic, in the middle of the whole crowd instead of on stage) she let me go drink and enjoy the show and took over working the guestlist.

You know, for a lot of people a concert ticket is something to shell out money for only when there's something they really want to see. For me, though, working at music venues and going to see live music 15 to 20 times a month, a concert experience is as routine a way of spending an evening for me as turning on the TV or just smoking a joint and listening to some CD's.  As a result, you get kind of desensitized. You see so many bands traipse across the stage, trying so hard to leave an indelible impression, and some succeed, and many fail.

And so it's rare, for me, to feel a sort of "Wow" at being in a room seeing a concert. It's rare for me to feel truly lucky at a concert, to be Here and Now, and to think that this is something "special" and that I am very fortunate to be watching what I'm watching.

When I got upstairs last night, the energy in the crowd was phenomenal.  I've never seen 400 people so communally excited about a show before.  The church nave was small, but with vaulted ceilings and an intimate lighting, and suspended beneath the stained glass rose window was a neon sign shaped like an open bible, a nod to the Arcade Fire's soon-to-be-released new album Neon Bible.

After they finished their acoustic rendition of the first song, Wake Up, all 10 members of the touring group took the stage to rapturous applause. Chills were riding over me in waves.  For the next hour and 15 minutes, the group launched through 9 or so new songs (including a much-improved, reworked No Cars Go that blew my fucking mind) and 4 old ones.

I haven't felt so blown away and lucky since Daft Punk @ Coachella, honestly.  The energy The Arcade Fire brings onstage with them is inimitable.  All ten members attack their instruments with the attitude of a percussionist, and it's a joy to watch them run around stage, picking up instruments and dropping them and trading spaces and places.

How often do you see a 10-piece band and find that you can look at each bandmember individually and really pick their instrument out of the soundscape? A lot of times these choral band experiences leave you feeling that the sound mix is a bit of a mess and you can't really pick apart what anyone's doing. But I could hear what each violinist was doing, I could hear the two french horns playing individual parts, and every other piece of the music just fell into perfect place beside everything else.

The Arcade Fire knew how much everyone in that room loved them, and when their voices would all rise together in choral harmony fists would rise in the crowd and it was like everyone's essence was just surging forward though really we stood still.  You know, an NYC crowd is hard to please. They stand there looking jaded as all hell, and never really smile, holding firm looks on their faces. But The Arcade Fire melted all that iciness away...

Fuck. That show was soooooo good!

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

hmm, sounds like a good show, but the music doesn't sound like it would suit me.

what kind of live music do you usually witness?

Have you seen the Mars Volta live in concert by any chance?

I'm a huge At The Drive-In / Volta fan, and a huge part of it is their live performance. I've never been to one, unfortunately, but I watch a lot of Youtube videos.

Their energy and spirit was unfounded, and I feel that there's a lot of semi-mainstream groups today that completely ripped their style. The Killers, Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy, etc. all come across as bastardizations of one of the most innovative groups of our time.

Anyway, back to the Arcade Fire. It sounds like a good show, and I've listened to them on and off for a while. There's another band I'd recommend for Arcade Fire fans called Architecture in Helsinki. The two groups can't really be compared, but they have similarities.

Architecture in Helsinki is mad trippy, by the way.

huh i should check them out. never got too into them, although i've listened to their catalog through and through. i'm too closed-minded nowadays, so miss out on a lot of bands that although one might not expect them to be a good "live" band, they end up fucking jamming
