Help - employer wont give me t4 (tax forms)

So,..

I worked for an irrigation and landscaping company for 3-4 weeks this summer. On my last pay cheque apperently I was paid approx. $100 bucks extra - i didn't really notice because my "trial wage" was supposed to increase after my first week* Anyways, i didn't notice, cashed my cheque and spent it. Supposedly (i hear thru my roommate; the bosses brother) that the boss is pissed off and wants that money back. fuck that, and to discipline me i am not supposed to get a t4.

While this is all happening, the other employee's still at work start getting dicked around with their last few cheques, - the boss breaks up with his girlfriend/kids mother, loses his house, owes rental companies HUGE sums of money, and starts hanging around sleezy waitresses at a sketchy bar. Its rumoured he may be addicted to cocaine (which he kicked years earlier.)

Anyways, Now, im not getting my T4, and am not on good terms with the boss. What do i do? Which government department would help me get these forms? I want to do my taxes.

* "trial wage," to explain - I was told by my roommate i would start at $10 bucks an hour. After my first cheque i realize that I was making something between minimum wage and $9 (which is unreasonable considering the caliber of work i was doing) By my second cheque, i confirmed with the site supervisor that i was going to be at $10 as i was originally told. Basically, by my last cheque i was "unsure" as to my wage, aswell as the overtime situation, when i was doing lots.

**(Was offered the job after i got laid off, by my roommate whose brother owned the company. No interview, just "start work on monday" - So be it. My roommate was very irresponsible and constantly woke up late - making me late for my ride to work. Basically, i missed maybe 3-4 shifts because the ride wouldn't wait, and the job site was too far away from public transport or alternative rides.

Besides that - i was a good employee that worked my balls off, doing shit jobs, i was well liked by my site supervisors, and co workers. Near the end of my time with the company, they had very little work for me but kept me around to *help* when they needed it ((which was never.)) At the end, i started looking for other work, got it instantly at a better pay wage, and left, as did my roommate(like 2 weeks before the end of the season.)

I do believe it's illegal for an employer to withhold important tax documents of employees. Call the IRS and maybe they can pressure him to give it up.

yeah, that's illegal as fuck and he knows it. There is a date, I think end of february, that employers HAVE to sent out t4s by.

He's just talking shit. If you don't have your t4 by march, starting calling the labour board and other such related government establishments.

100% illegal. I think it's the end of february, or the 22nd or something that they HAVE to be mailed out by.

you worked for 3-4 weeks tho. would that taxes really matter? or is the US taxman really take that shit seriously. i know ppl here that havn't filed taxes in years. probably never will. if you owe them they will freak on you, but if they owe you, they don't care. lol

They care. If he files his taxes without it, he can get extreme amounts of "penalties".

My buddy took ALL of his t4s to h&r block and the chick fucked up and forgot to submit one. He just found out he owes 3000+ in penalties for not submitting one of his t4s(only a couple months of work). He called H&R and was like "wtf", but it's his word against theirs and they aren't liable when you sign that shit. His gf's mom is a big "revenue canada" employee, like a higher up, and says he can't do shit. He'll have to pay it and then spend forever trying to fight it. Eventually he'll probably get it back, but still.....3000 bucks. That was only for not having a t4 submitted, when he filed his taxes.

Not a boat I wanna be in.

Though, I don't know what happens if you don't file them period, so I can't say about that.

ahh, thats one good thing about being 'poor',  I pay no income tax :cool:  Its not worth being poor.... but its a nice bonus.

Actually im in Canada - This is important because.. I wont get my quarterly GST cheques, if I don't file my taxes. Thats a good $210 dollars or so, ill miss being direct deposited.

Honestly, it wasn't an issue, ever before. I was planning to let it slide - However H&R block phoned me to remind me to file with them again this year.. I told them i wasn't interested and only had 1 T4 and she reminded me i wouldn't get my GST.

In total i've probably only made around $2200 dollars gross income this year, which after H&R block - will give me very minimal tax return. But like i said, the GST.

So, i figured id call the labour board.. but am having trouble locating this.. Anyone have a link? Would it be a provincial office or.. Federal? There's a human resource's center in town, you can file for EI and get passports and ID, etc.. Is this where i need to go?

So i called them left a message (the business is currently closed) - Im not sure the state of the business, or how to get ahold of them.

However, I've found that if i dont have a t4 by Feb 28th, then i can take legal action. Also that I can seek advice through the surrey taxation center.

*phew*
