Making a resume

I haven't needed a resume since high school. But now i have found my self jobless. How do i put a resume together? Do i make them specifically to each job? Or do i figure out which types of jobs i am applying to and make specific ones for each job group.

Does anyone have a sample resume? I have no clue what to do anymore.....

You can google up millions of examples.

In general, I'd start with the more objective and tangible qualifications first: diplomas, licensures, past employment and the dates.

After that, go into the B.S. by listing all your "qualifications and experience".

It's not really necessary to customize your resume; one should suffice. You should, however, make individual cover letters/letters of intent.

Not to be a downer, but it sucks when I realized how unqualified i really am. No college, no technical training, random jobs that mean nothing and hardly mirror the jobs i want.

Time to shape up.

make several that are field specific... 

if you are applying for a sales job, they won't care if you cooked at BK, you know?

Make yourself look as good as possible... make even your most menial duties sound important...

be sure to state a clear objective at the beginning of your resume... employers do want to know that you have goals.

I'll send you a copy of my resume if want.. i have a lot of scattered work history, too.

Badchad had good points; list tangible qualities first.  Work experience, education, etc.

Right now I've got twelve resumes on my desk that I'm looking through (and judging people by.)

The important thing to get right is your English.  Spelling mistakes on a resume are brutal and only sheer desperation is going to make me call somebody back that has spelling mistakes on their resume.  It speaks to lack of attention to detail, apathy, and mediocre standards in general.  If you get anything right, get your spelling right.

Use point form.  No paragraphs; nobody will read them.

Be concise.  The more words you have on your resume, the less likely I am to read it.

Use quantifiable achievements if possible ("During the two years I managed the department, sales increased 20%.")

Make it easy on the eyes.  Use Univers, Arial or Times New Roman.

Don't be artsy-fartsy; no graphics or fancy stationery. Don't use gimmicks, like mottoes or quotes from Einstein or whatever.

Remember: talk is cheap.  Everybody says they have great communications skills and excellent work ethic.  Those qualities will be assessed in an interview, not by reading your resume.

Almost all of them (especially the cover letters) are full of cliches.  The BEST applicants are capable of saying what they want to say without phrases like:

"I believe my unique combination of skills and experience blah blah"

"Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to meeting you to discuss my qualifications in person."

"I am organized and have great work ethic, attention to detail blah blah

There are a billion examples of resumes and cover letters on the web.  Look at lots of them and identify these cliches and avoid them.

Remember that a resume will not get you a job.  All a resume is good for is securing an interview. Just give them a reason to call you for an interview. That's when your attitude and real communication skills take over.


Good luck man!  Just remember, interviews get jobs, resumes don't.

I got most of it done except the cover letter and the objective part.

As far as my objective goes, I want to find a medium to work with. I like working with wood, i like working with glass, I like working with water. I like trades like carpentry, i like making water gardens. I guess i like being artistic.

Mix of fire, earth, and water... so zen...... Can i say i want a zentered life?

You can say whatever you want, but remember that the purpose of a resume is to convince a company that you may be financially lucrative to them and that they should interview you. I don't know what company you are applying to, but to be honest they probably aren't terribly interested in your personal goals unless they are likely to translate to profits for them.

So i got

References, hobbies, education, experience, and volunteer work.

Do i save my objective for the cover letter?

Am i leaving anything out?

Should i create a portfolio, showing my past work, like furniture i have made, patios, and walk-ways, water gardens things of that nature?

i would like to find a entry level carpentry job, whether it's furniture, residential, or commercial. But i would like to do mill work, like residential custom built cabinetry and molding.
